(33,295 posts)At least 13 people have been killed as a storm hit the US Midwest, bringing devastation to parts of Illinois, Missouri and Kansas.
At least 10 were killed in Harrisburg, Illinois, and another died near Buffalo, Missouri. More than 30 others were hurt.
Rescue workers are searching for any people trapped in wrecked homes, including a trailer park near Buffalo.

(82,849 posts)I've never lived in an area where tornados happen, but my feeble memory (a swiss-cheese-like amalgamation of questionable reliability) seems to tell me that tornado season is supposed to start late in March, getting worse for about six or seven weeks, then tapering off until late June.
Anyone with some actual knowledge care to educate me?

(67,823 posts)True enough, tornadoes happen year round. But this was a pretty big outbreak.

(34,133 posts)about 13 miles directly SouthWest of where I live. 2 are in critical condition, I think there were 6 others hurt. That part of the storm came over us a little bit after that and it was really blowing but nothing here thank goodness. We are very lucky, we have a lot of photos of funnels dropping right over my farm but no touch downs (it pays to live next to a professional photographer who loves to shoot weather shots). You can see them and hear them and feel them but no damage. Just a lucky spot I guess.
It damaged most of that little town, it will be a mess to clean up. Just a bitty thing but then that is all it takes with twisting winds.
I was expecting this since we have had essentially no winter here. My trees are budding and the pastures are greening up very quickly.

(67,823 posts)I saw on the weather map that a snow storm was just north of you.
I know what you mean about no winter. Same here. Spring is springing up everywhere. I have a tree to move and I may do it this weekend. Normally I'd be waiting for mid March.

(34,133 posts)I was just watching the local news. Apparently there was no warning for them. The stories of families being picked up in their trailers and twirled around then their trailer disintegrated and they were OK. A mom and her two daughters watching TV when they saw debris go by the window. They jumped in the tub and their house collapsed around them and a car and a long trailer hit them and wrapped around them. They were knocked out and had to be rescued. It is amazing and a horrible mess down there.
You could see the hook echo on radar and there had been a tornado on the ground SW of them from that same hook echo. I do not know why they were not warned. I am not sure we should not have been since we were right in the same path, we were not and nothing at all happened here but wind and rain. Hmmmm.
We are going to get everything ready and if the temps continue like this we are probably going to plant some peas. Why not? LOL, it is very strange.

(10,745 posts)And the NWS is saying there might be more severe weather tomorrow and the next day. Not pleasant to think about, really.
