“Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.”

A quote that has been attributed to JFK.

If the President resolves the Syrian issue without bombing them, who will declare victory? Will those that supported the bombing of Syria declare victory because they supported the President? And will they brag about how "their" President was playing nth degree chess all along?

And will those that were against bombing Syria declare victory because they got the end result they wanted?

Who is the orphan?

On the one hand, Obama does have a pretty clear history of being a counterpuncher and getting his opponents to do his work for him. On the other hand, he often just lucks out. On the third hand, it's not always easy to draw a firm line between the two (and, for that matter, being lucky is the one quality you probably want most in a President).

Putin's offer was almost certainly not part of some grand plan Obama had. However, making a credible enough threat of the use of force that the international community got off its ass and did something almost certainly was.

People can credit whomever they like. IMO it was two world leaders whose options were shrinking because of international pressure ceding to a diplomatic solution. If it happens. We'll see.

there will be orphans.

Syria has to create its' own "victory" and the only means of that happening is for a political, diplomatic settlement to take place, sharing power within that nation.

Thanks for the thread, kentuck.
