Just no.

I usually don't do these all-aboard kind of threads, but I'm genuinely curious where matters stand with the crew I've spent twelve years with.
I say no.
What say you?

(49,007 posts)Anybody can be an opinion leader by writing cogent, thoughtful articles that hit home points thoroughly and convincingly. One voice like that can inspire thousands and millions. Obama and politicians pay attention to thousands and millions.
Writing like that is hard to do.
Much easier to bomb a thread with a nihilist post like yours that tries to urge us all to go home and shut up. Wrong place to push that line.

(37,161 posts)Tell us what you want us to commit to. And tell us what you'll do if that's not enough.
Do you want a new Desert Storm? That would take care of the gas, though it will leave the mess of dealing with the rebel factions. You want that too?
I'm going to guess "not", so what lesser measure do you think we can get away with and still be effective? And what's Plan B if what you thought would be enough wasn't?
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)First you give Assad a ultimatum: He has thirty days to destroy his stockpile of Chemical Weapons with UN verification , sign the Chemical Weapons Ban and turn himself in to the World Court for Trial .
If Those terms are not met, Let Assad know that he is marked man and that we will at the first opportunity use one our very small personal drones and fly it up his ass!
bullsnarfle
(254 posts)So anybody that we are pissed off at, we now just assasinate them.

Make that "America, no better than a mob hit goon".
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)just people you use WDM's and refuse to quit.
So you think Assad should free range to use Wdm's at his pleasure. .....?
bullsnarfle
(254 posts)our President should have free range to assassinate anyone he/she wants to, at their pleasure? Now THAT is a scary thought, pal. There is no guarantee that the next prez won't be a total nutcake, ya know. Hell, this drone crap is bad enough now as it is, how many "collateral" bystanders (incl. little kids, babies) are killed for every presumed bad guy? Lots, dude. Lots. But as long as you get a good chuckle out of Assad with a drone up his keester, well, it's all good, right?
As to the question of WMD's, does that mean it's ok by you to slaughter people with "conventional" weapons? So, if you kill 20 people with a "WMD", and 200 with bombs, are the bombed people somehow "less dead"? Not that I don't think WMD's are horrible, but so is a nutjob wielding an AK47 in a school full of kids, or a batch of white phosphorus, or a bunch of cluster bombs, and on and on it goes...
And why are you in such a god-awful RUSH to jump into the middle of this cluster-fux anyhow? Seems to me, if we had taken a little more time and checked out our shit a bit closer, we would not have had many thousands of our people dying/maimed-for-life in Iraq. Did you buy the "smoking gun/mushroom cloud" then? Why not? Wasn't it the same bunch of black-holers - CIA, NSA, m-o-u-s-e - (or close enough for a smell test) that shoveled up all the BS "intelligence" that Saddam had WMD's? Did you trust them then? If not, then why would you trust them now?
I don't.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)NO. But WE should be able to deliver Assad's Justice when no other options are available, or any crazy asshole who is using WMD on people.
Words have meanings,,,, dont make up stuff and say i said it;
allowing Assad to bask in his "cheap grace" if no action is taken against him, will only lead to him using his WMD's again.
Welcome to the real world, not all problems have ideal solutions.
WE can deliver Justice to Assad with way fewer people dying than will die by his hands if left to continue his use of WMD
also Your logic is flawed by trying to associate Assad's wmd killings to some other acts of war or lone crazy people. But nice try at that fallacy.
btw..... by definition a weapon that only kills 20 people is not a WMD
Eventually you are unaware that Justice and Retribution are very Liberal concepts.
Somebody needs to stand up for Assad's present and future victims.
Thats Why i am in a hurry to get this done.
It is a shame that so many People who proclaim to be Liberals seem to be more concerned with Assad future than all the people he has and will kill with his WMD
JHB
(37,161 posts)Considering that one of Syria's major potential military opponents for decades has been the Israeli Air Force, any place Assad goes will probably have active air defenses. That's going to be a flight environment that's a lot rougher on drones than remote areas of Pakistan.
(Reuters) - Prowling the skies of Pakistan and Yemen, armed drones are America's weapon of choice in its war against al Qaeda, but they are unlikely to play a major role in any U.S. strike against Syria, underscoring the limitations of unmanned aircraft.
Drones do not have the capability for air-to-air combat and would be vulnerable to Syria's defense system of surface-to-air missiles and radar which can track and shoot down warplanes, never mind slower-moving drones.
The Hellfire missiles generally carried by drones also lack the firepower of a cruise missile, which is considered the likely weapon for any limited U.S. strike against President Bashar al-Assad's forces. Washington blames Assad's government for a chemical weapons attack near Damascus last month.
"It's well-known that the Syrian air defense system is robust," a U.S. defense official said. "Drones, like any other (aerial) platform, are vulnerable to integrated air defenses."
So the drones are likely to end up as so many clay pigeons without a "GOP solution" to eliminate Syrian air defenses. What's your Plan C? And Plan D. And so on, for each one, what will you do if the plan doesn't work. How far are you willing to ramp it up? When do you "that's enough" and stop. And what makes you think that once it gets rolling it can be stopped where you think it should end and not keep rolling because other groups are still pushing it along?
What I noted isn't a "GOP solution", it's one that can actually eliminate those chemical weapons so that Assad can't use them nor will they fall into the hands of radicals among the rebel groups. I'm not advocating it, I'm making sure you know that THAT is what you want to potentially get us into.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)that the Syrian Air Defense is unable to detect them.
You are still thinking in GOP mind set!
btw.....Who said ""shock & awe for one"" not me please dont try to rewrite my post. I can fuck them up enough on my own, Thank you;.
JHB
(37,161 posts)If _Assad_ thinks he's safe from drones, then what demonstration do you propose to disabuse him of that notion?
And what do you propose if the demonstration doesn't work?
Also, if you don't care to have your posts "rewritten" with what you think is an unfair characterization, then how about you take your own advice and knock off with the "GOP strategy" and "GOP mindset" garbage.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)but i am sure that the USA can take Assad's last breath!
btw when you have to make up stuff and present them as something i said, you have run out of meaningful things to say.
So You dont think the GOP has/ have had strategies and mindset?

(37,161 posts)A missile strike just to "send a message" will obligate us to do even more late if it ends up being ineffective, which is very likely if the target isn't CW stockpiles and and it's not supposed to alter the balance of the civil war.
If a few months later there's another gas attack (and it won't matter if it's plain as day Assad's order, or if it's really muddy as to who actually made the attack) are we going to do nothing? Or will there be calls and pressure for new action: everything from "something must be done, we have to do more" to the dickswingers saying "he's thumbing his nose at us, if we don't do something we'll look like a paper tiger! Our credibility is on the line!"
Does anyone honestly think one missile strike will be the end of it?
If you think we MUST take military action because of the chemical weapon usage must not go unpunished, then that's an argument for something much bigger than anything being planned currently: something that will eliminate those chemical weapons so that they cannot be used by Assad nor by anyone else. And would entail ground forces, the effective destruction of Assad's regime, and dealing with the jihadis and other people that Assad used to keep a lid on through brutal suppression.
Think it through. If Plan A doesn't do the job, what's Plan B? And Plan C? Plan D? Plan E? Plan Q?
Think of what you really want to commit us to... and remember the it'd be very foolish to count on it stopping where you think it should.
So no.

(13,133 posts)But Maybe we should go all in and just say YES!
Somehow it seems those placed in charged in government as of late, seem to have this major bug up their ass. Both of the supposedly liberal democratic senators in my state of California are in support of Obama on any actions in Syria.
Congress is only slightly more liked and believed in than any supposedly needed military action in Syria. The way I think of it is like we are now in the twilight zone and most population must be crazy. For more people to believe in space Aliens than the inevitable increased military action in Syria tells me not to expect any mass awareness anytime soon
On edit: This is perfect example why that even if someone believes in something does not always make it so. What it kind of looks like to me is just the wormy direction that the 1% opposition readies it's population for it's imperial way

(12,228 posts)I'm reviewing all the other call to arms over my lifetime(all post Korean war). It is getting really pathetic I guess because they really don't care what we think anyway. The excitement, the moral issue debate, the closeted evidence, is just chokingly obscene, the information a drumbeat tease, the goals a sick joke.
Pretty much in the style of fighting for voting integrity for the CIA candidate in the Ukraine while the US Canada and Mexico defrauded their voters. I have about ten issues we could debate that would save the planet, the nation, democracy, people, you know those more important things that don't involve murdering someone for points in a country that has nothing really to do with us. It would even be new to involve the UN etc. to establish rules to go after heads of state that commit war crimes, murder their own people. The current debate? Just petty and sick. Right up Congress's alley.

I sent my third email to my senators/rep this morning & I will call again when their offices open. Make your voice heard. I've told my reps that this is a deal breaker. Anyone who votes yes on attacking Syria will not get my vote in 2014. I changed my affiliation to Greens about 6 weeks ago. The dems keep asking, "Who else you gonna vote for?" Well, the Greens, perhaps. Dem leadership continues to drift further & further to the right but wants my loyalty. Not anymore. They have played me for the fool long enough. Voting for the lesser of two evils has gotten me exactly what I didn't want in the first place.

(15,689 posts)No to letting intelligence officials embark on sprees of perjury in their testimony before Congress. No to letting banksters get off free after destroying our system of property registration and stealing billions and billions of dollars of real estate. No to a policy of giving the aforesaid banksters billions and billions of free money to "invest" in the stock market while the real economy languishes and crumbles and wages erode from the effects of the same banksters bidding up the price of basic commodities like food and petroleum in a speculative spiral fueled with their interest free dough. No to a scheme of rent extraction and profiteering enforced at government gunpoint, masquerading as universal health care. No to doubling and tripling down in Afghanistan. No to repeatedly extending tax cuts for the rich while coming up with artificial gimmicks to create a series of OMYGODWERERUNNINGOUTOFMONEY!!11!! fiscal crises. No to letting war criminals retire to bask in the fruits of their crime without fear of deportation to the Hague. No to repeated attempts to cut Social Security below their already inadequate levels. Your proposition may be good,
But let's have one thing understood,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And even when you've changed it or condensed it,
I'm against it.
I'm opposed to it,
On general principle, I'm opposed to it.
For months before my son was born,
I used to yell from night to morn,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
And I've kept yelling since I first commenced it,
I'm against it!
