Ark. SWAT officers kill man, 107, in standoffAP 12:35 p.m. EDT September 8, 2013
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) Police in the southeast Arkansas city of Pine Bluff say a 107-year-old man is dead after SWAT officers shot back at him during a standoff at a home.
Pine Bluff Lt. David Price tells KATV that police officers called to the home Saturday were told Monroe Isadore had pointed a weapon at two people there.
Officers had the threatened pair leave the home and approached a bedroom. Police say Isadore shot through the door at officers but missed hitting them.
More officers were called, including a SWAT team that inserted a camera into the room and confirmed Isadore had a handgun.
Police say SWAT officers released gas into the room when negotiations didn't work. They say Isadore shot at officers and they fired back, killing him.

(241 posts)I don't see what the problem is. What were they supposed to do?

(12,409 posts)negotiating skills would've been quite useful. Ahhh what a concept.

Apparently not part of their training.

Firing at cops.

(65,403 posts)him. He wasn't going anywhere and wasn't in a posituon to harm anyone who did not approach him. All they had to do was wait a bit. He would have conked out--probably sooner rather than later, andcwith the camera on him, they would have been able to tell when he was asleep.
He did bot need to be shot. The cops are just trigger-happy. Probably, too, one of them decidedthe old guy needed to be "taught a lesson" about respecting their authoritay!
The other possibility is mere cowardice: one of the cops might have reflexively,--quite thoughtlessly--returned fire because being shot at blanked his mind with fear so that he just reacted.

(62,325 posts)minor the threat. Any excuse will do.
Let's see, if that had been Norway eg, the police would have waited, understanding that a 107 year old man was certainly no threat to them.
When, eg, someone managed to sneak into Buckingham Palace and go right to the Queen's bedroom, instead of mowing him down, the cops talked to him and escorted him out of the Palace.
But in the Home of the Brave everyone is so afraid, even of an old man who obviously couldn't shoot straight, there was no other option but to kill him.
What a country!

(51,666 posts)I'm betting he was a lifelong gun nutter. HE SHOT AT THE COPS.

(65,616 posts)Was he hold out behind the bed? A 107 old prepper? They probably threw in the gas and he went apeshit with the gun.

(13,985 posts)Then started shooting at the swat team. I'm not a cop defender or anything, but seriously, what shouldve they done? Let him keep shooting because of his age?

(13,985 posts)His mistake was shooting at the cops though. There is only one outcome when that happens, regardless of age.

(65,403 posts)Considering his age and other aspects of the situation, NOT killing him would have been quite easy, and NOT killing *unless it is actually necessary* should be cops' default mode.

(154,021 posts)It might be shocking due to the age, but once he opened fire the escalation was expected
tblue37
(65,403 posts)He was too old to outlast them. They had a camera on him and he was not in a position to threaten anyone who didn't *present* themselves as an easy target.

This is pure speculation, and the investigation could discover this, was this suicide by cop?

tblue37
(65,403 posts)he was locked in his room, so no one was in any immediate danger. He would have fallen asleep soon enough--and with the camera on him, they would know when he did.
They were in a hurry and didn't want to take the time to do it right when it is so easy just to blow the old guy away.
