107-year-old Arkansas man dies in shootout with S.W.A.T.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - A 107-year old Pine Bluff man died Saturday after a shootout with officers and S.W.A.T. members. The Pine Bluff Police Dept. released the following information about the incident on Saturday evening.

SNIP

When they arrived, they were able to determine that an Aggravated Assault had occurred against two people at the residence. The suspect, Monroe Isadore (M, 107 years old), had pointed a weapon at them. The officers had the two victims leave the residence, for their safety, and approached the door to the bedroom where Isadore was supposed to be.

SNIP

Negotiations continued for some time and when S.W.A.T arrived, negotiations still continued. S.W.A.T. was able to insert a camera into the room, where Isadore was, and confirmed he was armed with a handgun. S.W.A.T. inserted gas into the room, after it was evident negotiations were unsuccessful, in hopes Isadore would surrender peacefully. When the gas was inserted into the room, Isadore fired rounds at the S.W.A.T. officers that had inserted the gas from outside a bedroom window.

Shortly afterwards, a S.W.A.T. entry team, inside the residence, breached the door to the bedroom and threw a distraction device into the bedroom. Isadore then began to fire on the entry team and the entry team engaged Isadore, killing him.

The investigation is still ongoing."

I'm not saying a 107-year old could not move around and post a threat with weapon in hand. But even the most "spry" 107-year old does not have particularly good reflexes - I would think there would be a way to deal with this that would not result in death.

I can think of at least 6 ways they could have handled it differently-- Especially after the others were removed from his presence.

They could have just let him sit there until he needed food, water, a Depends change etc.

They could have even waited until he needed a nap

But shooting in tear gas and a couple of concussion grenades apparently stirred his feeble abilities into action

We can shoot a bear out of a tree with a tranquilizer dart. But it's beyond our capacity to deal with a 107 yr old with an issue.
Sigh...
sigh.

The guy assaulted to other people in the house that they were able to get out and then barricaded himself in a room in the house. He shot at negotiators immediately through the door, they negotiated with him for some time, tried to use gas in the room to knock him out, and he just continued firing at them.

Interesting how you snip out the most relevant parts of the event in order to try to make it appear that something was done wrong here. He was a fucking nutter with a gun that already assaulted two other people in the house, they tried negotiating with him for some time, they tried using gas, and the loony violent nut with the gun just kept firing at them. It makes no difference how old he was, he was a violent nutter with a gun that had already hurt people, and they clearly did everything they could to talk him down, they inserted cameras and tried gassing him and instead he continued to shot at them. He shot through the door at the police as soon as they arrived and announced themselves long before SWAT ever got there. Sometimes crazy violent nutters with guns can't be negotiated with DESPITE best efforts and go on a shooting frenzy which is what this asshole did.

Do you not GET IT that they DID use physiological tactics on him to try getting him to surrender? That's what negotiators DO for fuck's sake. Good grief, it's not a matter of him coming out of the room, it's a matter of him STOPPING SHOOTING AT THEM, LAYING DOWN HIS WEAPON and SURRENDERING, none of which he was willing to do despite best efforts.

I guess you think the best thing to have done was leave the lunatic in the house with the people he had ALREADY assaulted, send him some flowers and hope that he stops shooting at people and surrenders UNARMED when he eventually gets hungry... never mind the fact that he was ALREADY SHOOTING AT THEM.

I'm not getting the timeline on this story from start of the altercation to the end.

4:25 p.m first response by police at the scene is the only time I get on the 7 sources I've found

after that I get no timeline on the time of death. and how much time the police spent there in negotiation

I did find this on Pine Bluff

Pine Bluff, Arkansas is the most dangerous town in America despite its rather small population of 49,000 people and its disconnect from major cities.

While the town houses only 49,000 residents, the economic downturn and rising gang activity led to 18 murders in Pine Bluff through all of 2012. Eighteen murders with a population of 49,000 is seven times the national average per capita.

"guidelines for crossing picket lines" or 'Preparing and Executing Mass Layoffs and Downsizings"

I get what you are saying. It does seem to me that there must have been some other way to deal with an old man with a gun. And I strongly believe more people could use training in how to deescalate situations, how to try to understand and work through conflict with potentially violent persons in such a way as to subvert or avoid those violent tendencies. It would be a benefit to almost all of us.

But that's a weird weird world you just linked to. I dont think they would be my first choice for where to try and learn more of how to do that.
