Fire Lookout (and other USFS) Jobs (Vacancy Announcements)

Several DUers always ask me about fire lookout jobs, like mine. Last year was tight, but it looks like more openings this year. For the US Forest Service positions, you MUST go through Avue Digital Services - which is a royal pain in the ass. Links to Avue are inbedded in the vacancy announcements. Veterans get 5 points, which is a big deal on these jobs.

The job site is sponsored by the private Forest Fire Lookout Association, so all vacancies might not be posted. Once you get into Avue you should have access to all announcements.

I love Pinyon Peak in Idaho (short season, great mountains), but I'll probably be back in Oregon for Fire Season 2012.

BTW: The openings close - typically - in mid-March

Nice to see you, Mac, and glad to hear you're going back to the lookout this spring. I look forward to more of your great pictures!

Oops, sorry! Meant to reply to DemoTex.

I'm getting ready for the 2012 fire season. I'm just laying low in my "cabin" on the edge of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness area on the NC/SC border (near Caesar's Head mountain).

Do they offer training services to those with no experience?

How much does experience weigh on one's probability of being selected for one of these positions?

Thanks for your response.

'Envy' doesn't describe what I feel. I have way too much to deal with down here in the mud.

Thanks much for the updates. The opportunity to live vicariously through someone is actually pretty neat.

I am looking forward to reading your reports and seeing your pictures this season. It's always a treat for those of us who do not know the forests of Oregon. I hope to go up and see it one of these days, but I could not work in a tower. Sad but I couldn't.
