Obama hits Romney hard on auto bailout "thats a load of you-know-what" (Transcript Added)

President Barack Obama has been digging at Mitt Romney's opposition to the auto bailout for months, but as he spoke to auto workers on Tuesday -- and as Michigan votes in its presidential primary -- he attacked the former Massachusetts governors more forcefully on the issue than ever before.

"It’s been funny to watch some of these politicians completely try to rewrite history now that you’re back on your feet. The same folks who said if we went forward with our plan to rescue Detroit, “you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye.”

That line, "you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye"? It comes right from the first paragraph of Romney's oft-cited 2008 New York Times op-ed, in which he urged the federal government not to bail out the struggling automakers.

"Now they’re saying they were right all along.... Or you’ve got folks saying worse, they’re saying that the problem is that you, the workers, made out like bandits in all of this; that saving the American auto industry was just about paying back unions. Really? I mean, even by the standards of this town, that’s a load of you-know-what."

Transcript of Speech at UAW Conference
Hello, Autoworkers! Thanks Bob, for that introduction. Thanks to your International Executive Board and all of you for having me here today. I brought along my Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, too.

I’m always honored to spend some time with folks who represent the working men and women of America. It’s unions like yours that fought for jobs and opportunity for generations of American workers. It’s unions like yours that helped build an arsenal of democracy that defeated fascism. It is unions like yours that forged the American middle class – the greatest engine of prosperity the world has ever known.

You helped write America’s story. And today, you’re busy writing a proud new chapter. You’re reminding us that no matter how tough times get, Americans are tougher. No matter how many punches we take, we don’t give up. We get up, we fight back, we move forward, and we come out the other side stronger than before.

You are showing America what’s possible. So I’m here today to tell you one thing: you make me proud.

President Obama Dings Romney In UAW Speech

Edit: I realize there should be an apostrophe for the word "that's" in title of OP, however when it's added for some reason it keeps removing the quote...strange

You're in a situation where you're literally digging in your couch to get by. You've got two jobs, and things still aren't looking bright. You have to work one job just to afford the other job - gas, clothing, etc. You really don't have time to be thinking about your "best interests," because you're basically being forced to consider your immediate interests. So when you catch a soundbyte like "this position my opponent takes might cost you your job!" that's what you hear - you don't have time to go analyze whether that's true. when you hear "All these people from another country are taking your jobs and driving down your wages," you think, hey, that makes sense, 'cause you KNOW you're busting your ass, but you're still not "making it."

One of the sad ironies of our society is that our politics reinforce and perpetuate poverty in his fashion.

That is the crux of the problem -- not that I think workers did, but just that they didn't get totally screwed.

People like Romney were salivating at the chance to declare bankruptcy and wipe out all of the pensions and other benefits the workers had accrued and drive down future salaries and benefits.

Unfortunately, millions of workers bought the Plutocrats propaganda hook, line and sinker. I watched as younger workers refused to join the union and supported so-called "Right to Work Laws" that were nothing more than union busting tactics. When 36 % of the labor force belonged and supported unions, they had a powerful voice in the halls of Congress. Today they have virtually no effective influence. In the vacuum, the corporate managers not only owed the politicians, their lobbyist actually wrote the legislation that they didn't even bother to read.

I feel for the plight of the American workers, however, their own greed and ignorance allowed the corporations to effectively destroy the Fair Deal policies that created the Middle Class. The result has been dramatic. Their jobs have been outsourced, health care and pensions down the drain. What I find ironic is that Fire Fighter and Police, who have overwhelmingly supported the Republican Party have seen the GOP turn on them in their determination to break the unions. I can't help not to think of the WWII minister who said to the effect that when Nazis attack various groups he wasn't concerned until it was too late and they came for him.

Thanks for hitting Romney hard. Would be nice if some here would do that without dragging good Dems through the mud.
