So, Mr President, you state that the funds for this war already exist... Really?

I guess I wasn't aware of the chump change you folks at the head of the government keep lying around.

Since you have such great gobs of funding, could you possibly send me back the campaign contribution that I made back in 2008? At the time, I couldn't afford it, but I thought that getting some "Change" would be worth the Hopeful Investment of having you become President.

I realize that my campaign contribution is not exactly from the same set of funds that this war is from. So maybe you could note that the contribution was made? Then once out of office, when you start raking in the big bucks that are Quid Pro Quo for your letting the Oval Office help out the MIC-Surveillance Corporations and they start having you give speeches in front of corporate podiums, (I know and you know that you will be paid well then), so maybe then the money can come back to me with interest.

I can always Hope!, right?

Anyway, since the funds for this war are not a problem, maybe there are some other items we could find funding for.

Many households have endured setbacks the like of which have not been envisioned since the days of the Great Depression, and even John McCain might convince himself that a war we cannot even pay for now is not in our best interest.

Granted that sarin is a cruel and unusual punishment, but so is the "punishment" of having our jobs outsourced, having our schools shut down, our fire fighters laid off, etc. When budgets are cut back drastically on the state level, then jobs are lost.

When jobs are lost, people cannot keep up the payments on their homes and cars, and sometimes they are even going hungry. If you are dead from, say suicide, as some four people in my small community are, you are dead, and just as lifeless as if you have had sarin sprayed on you. Same goes for those whose death came about due to untreated illness.

The school budget for my local district was over 16 million three years ago - it has been cut to the bone this year with a budget of less than 10 million.

Today you explained that the funds exist for this war...

Really, Mr President? I thought that we as a nation were all so broke, that you know,
austerity,
and you know,
cutbacks,
and you know,
forget about retiring at 65 you friggin' suckers, because the Federal government needs our Social Security to pay off the Six trillions of dollars the last two wars cost the public.

Ten to twelve millions of America households have been foreclosed upon, some of whom were not even behind in payments! And much of the 50 billion dollar program that you have set up to provide homeowners with relief was not available to normal people, as bank officials and mortgage officials made it impossible for HAMP funding to happen, unless you had a Congress critter or two to help you navigate the situation.

But all of these problems can be swept aside, as we need to show the world all about our moral authority! I guess that is the one thing we still have in this nation that we had back in the 1950's when I was a kid. We no longer have the decent educational system I enjoyed, we no longer have libraries that are open, we no longer have community hospitals that are about people's health rather than profit, we no longer have jobs or a middle class, we no longer have our homes, (which I guess is good, because we no longer have fire fighters to protect those homes) BUT HELL'S BELL'S WE have OURSELVES some outstanding moral authority!

But it's even worse, because they just take it, metaphorically speaking right out of your wallet, then tell you, 'you can't afford food'.

But a lot of it is our own fault, it's time now for the people to begin the changes THEY need to make regarding how we have voted, allowing ourselves to be so divided etc. Donations to Party Pacs, all of that.

Now that we have a full picture of how it all works there is no excuse NOT to begin the changes that are so badly needed.

Thu Sep 5, 2013, 12:34 AM
Sep 2013

And of course, they' re heavily tied into the newspapers and TV stations, so the causal listener or viewer thinks this is the best thing since sliced bread.

The defenders for the stadium will say all sorts of things, like, "Consider how many jobs will be created." But many local businesses could be hurt by having to compete with the stadium, as it sets up restaurants and small food outlets - and often there are no laws for a stadium owner to follow. And who on earth wouldn't create a bunch of jobs if given the money to do so?

Example, just this week, it was revealed that the San Francisco Giants team paid $544,715 in back wages and recovery monies to liquidated employees. Hard working stadium employees were not even being paid minimum wages, and many workers were not paid overtime and then were fired if they complained....

these choices below. now all of a sudden we have money for war...and we're supposed to believe this isn't going to affect US? as if corporations are going to pick up the bill?

this *deficit spending* will force deeper cuts, more privatization and likely push seniors off Social Security.

http://www.americansfortaxfairness.org/tax-tradeoffs/

Medical Research OR Tax Breaks for CEO Pay
Automatic across-the-board spending cuts known as the “sequester” slashed $1.5 billion from the
2013 budget at the National Institutes of Health, which support research on life-threatening diseases.
Meanwhile, a tax loophole allows huge corporations to duck $2.5 billion in taxes each year by taking tax
deductions for showering their CEOs with stock options.

Unemployment Benefits OR Tax Loopholes for Wall Street Traders
Due to $2.4 billion in across-the-board federal spending cuts this year, Americans who have been
unemployed for a long time have had modest weekly benefits averaging just $289 cut by $43 a week.
Meanwhile, wealthy investors in risky financial products such as derivatives get special tax breaks that cost
$2.9 billion a year.

Head Start for Kids OR Tax Giveaways for Corporate Jets
Head Start, the early childhood education program for disadvantaged children, was cut by $400 million
in 2013, denying services to thousands of kids. On the other end of the economic spectrum, corporations
get a special tax break worth $370 million a year for owning private jets.

Better Education for Kids OR Tax Breaks for Hedge Fund Managers
Federal support for elementary, secondary and special education has plummeted by $1.7 billion this
year. Congress continues to protect the exorbitant incomes of Wall Street titans by taxing many of their
earnings at a low 20 percent rate, rather than applying the top marginal income tax rate that is twice as
high. This “carried interest” loophole costs $1.7 billion a year.

Help Seniors Get Social Security OR Lower Taxes for Multimillionaires
Funds needed to handle Social Security applications and to process checks have been cut by $286
million, causing significant delays in getting benefits to those who need them. Meanwhile, a provision in
the tax code meant to encourage middle-class families to save for retirement is being used by extremely
wealthy families to shelter tens of millions of dollars. Annual tax break: $388 million.

Food for Low-Income Families OR Tax Subsidies for CEO Bonuses
House Republicans have announced a plan to kick 4 to 6 million Americans off the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as Food Stamps. The cuts total $40 billion over 10 years.
While poor kids would get less food, large corporations would continue to get tax deductions when they
give their CEOs lavish “performance-based” bonuses. That tax loophole costs $50 billion over 10 years.

Protect the Environment OR Give Tax Breaks to Oil Companies
The sequester cut $4.6 billion in 2013 funding for agencies that conduct research and enforce
regulations to protect the environment. But for decades, the tax code has provided special subsidies to
highly profitable oil and gas companies, which cost $4.6 billion a year.

Modernize Our Infrastructure OR Give Tax Breaks to Send Jobs Overseas
America’s infrastructure is crumbling, while other industrial nations continue to modernize. A robust
investment of $464 billion over five years in highways, bridges and other systems would create more than
2.6 million new jobs a year and provide for stronger long-term economic growth. But large corporations
like Apple dodge their responsibility to support America’s infrastructure by hiding billions of dollars in
offshore tax havens. Ending this huge loophole, known as “deferral,” would raise $606 billion over 10
years.

She died before the teabaggers came along, but she would be one today, if she were alive. "We need a big bad military," she used to say. I couldn't even talk to her. Nothing would get through. It exists, Mr. President, in your willingness to slash new holes through our national safety net programs for the poor and elderly. There is also still some money being spent on roads, disease prevention and education. You can get a little of what you need there. I'm sure your new Republican allies in Congress will be able to help you target the unnecessary things to cut.

As a last resort you can also take a good bit from the veteran's administration. I mean, it's not like we are going to have any casualties in Syria anyway. I'm sure your generals have all told you about how that just won't happen in this war.

Cries of "The sky is falling" are more or less unending. Afghanistan costs around $2 billion a week. Five billion dollar stealth destroyers, $40 billion dollar aircraft carriers, $500+ million dollar target barges (Littoral Combat Ships), $400 billion dollars of F-35s, etc. etc.

The US is now down to 10 carrier groups and two of them are off the coast of Syria.

53¢ of every tax dollar goes to the military.

Next time someone tells you the United States is broke & our seniors have to eat dog food, & that we have to cut the hot lunch program for our kids, tell them to watch this 4 minute video.

The out of control military/security industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned about is sucking up 53 cents of every tax dollar & they want more. Talk about entitlement!

I have lost all respect for this president. I am proud to say I am no longer a Democrat. There's your legacy, Obama. The third way has finally driven the democratic wing out of the party. Don't blame me when you guys go down in flames in 14 & 16. Stand for something besides repub lite policies, you fucks!

What we school kids were told would happen should the Communists ever parachute their soldiers over here, and conquer our nation militarily.

No right for the middle class to hold private property unless it is in a very rich neighborhood or else off somewhere that no one wants (note the "eminent domain" seizures of property in Texas so the Ed Rendell Big Energy Corporation can do its fracking unimpeded,) our schools are a mess, the tax code is unfair, and punitive to the small businesses, our post offices are under the threat of closure so the Big Mail Firms can clean up, the banks take almost half of every dollar of profit generated in the country, and the military gets a lot of the rest! Then add in the surveillance, the 'free speech zones" at the places where people need to gather to make their voices heard, and all the rest of it, and what country has this become? And then consider what African Americans are enduring, especially in the Deep South.

Michael Moore opened one of his books with a side by side comparison of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City that was imploded by the bombs, and the buildings in Detroit that had fallen apart due to age. Both speak of loss of life. The contrast is only that those killed by the bombs were killed outright, whereas the collapse of our industries and jobs mean that many in the lower middle class are dying bit by bit each day.

I don't get it. Apparently someone somewhere made him a deal he couldn't refuse, and he took it.

The other theory would be that he was CIA to begin with, but that seems tinfoil, doesn't it? My hackles first stood on end when Michele offered the press her tour of her organic garden, while Obama was appointing Monsanto folks to every FDA section and division where he could place them. Nice diversionary tactic.

Secretary of State John Kerry said at Wednesday’s hearing that Arab counties have offered to pay for the entirety of unseating President Bashar al-Assad if the United States took the lead militarily.

“With respect to Arab countries offering to bear costs and to assess, the answer is profoundly yes,” Kerry said. “They have. That offer is on the table.”

Asked by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) about how much those countries would contribute, Kerry said they have offered to pay for all of a full invasion.

“In fact, some of them have said that if the United States is prepared to go do the whole thing the way we’ve done it previously in other places, they’ll carry that cost,” Kerry said. “That’s how dedicated they are at this. That’s not in the cards, and nobody’s talking about it, but they’re talking in serious ways about getting this done.

With the war in Iraq over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down, the U.S. military is deploying its forces far beyond declared combat zones. Inrecent years, for example, Washington has very publicly proclaimed a “pivot to Asia,” a “rebalancing” of its military resources eastward, without actually carrying out wholesale policy changes. Elsewhere, however, from the Middle East to South America, the Pentagon is increasingly engaged in shadowy operations whose details emerge piecemeal and are rarely examined in a comprehensive way. Nowhere is this truer than in Africa. To the media and the American people, officials insist the U.S. military is engaged in small-scale, innocuous operations there. Out of public earshot, officers running America’s secret wars say: “Africa is the battlefield of tomorrow, today.”

Cut programs for the elderly, the poor, the disabled you say? Such programs that have managed to still exist despite continuous cuts because ... there is no more money to support them (or so they say) are in big trouble NOW and shouldn't have to exist in a nation as rich as the USA is (or claims to be!).

Does this fool with no money to pay for this crap care? Seems not does it? again!

As of my reply, I was happy to see a whole lotta posters applauding liberal and (once) Democratic values! A totally refreshing change that I have not seen in quite a while on DU.

How can one argue with anything in this post? I for one will not be donating to ANY political figure in the next two elections. My money is worthless to them compared to big donors and my voice is silent. I will be giving my money and time to my community instead and I am entirely sure it will be put to much better use. I wish we could see that we must heal and lead our communities and stop playing the manufactured gladiator games of divide and conquer and blue vs red team that is doing nothing but giving the fat cats a big old laugh.

Thank you for the best thread on DU

Party for anti-war sentiment and actions.

During Vietnam,we had a Democratic Governor in Wisconsin who finally said he would not let anyone opposed to the war be arrested if they didn't report on the day they were drafted.

His conduct was modeled on the example shown by Martin Luther King, Jr, and Robert Kennedy.

There are two types of Democrats now on DU - those of the older generation, who remain true to the vision of FDR, of John F Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, MLK, Eugene McCarthy. And who don't want us to be Republican lite. And those who grew up under George Dubya and don't understand that once there was a huge philosophical dividing line between the two parties regarding war. And regarding poverty.

Hell's Bells, Eisenhower demonstrated more courage in the projects that he got underway during his Administrtion than the current President. He saw to it that Congress was informed that there HAD TO BE programs that enabled the nation to build a national highway system. He saw to it that Congress was informed that there were community hospitals, and community colleges. With so many people working on so many projects, there was almost no unemployment.

With the money households had at their disposal, people bought homes and new cars.

The current President handed the government over to the Biggest of The Bankers and Financial Firms almost within the first sixty days of being in office. And he put our country's food supply into the hands of Monsanto. All thsi wa done through hsi appointments. Of coursse, for the DU'ers who are living on their investments, this is all peachy keen.

Check out what Catherina is saying in her post way above this one. Our young people are now to be rented out by Dubai and Saudi Arabia - as the only thing this Administration can come up with in terms of full time employment for our young people is a stint in the military.

I have been there to witness the World trade Center falling down live on my TV. I have been there to see 20 children dying in a grade school because of one mentally sick individual being able to get a gun. There are certain thing that do not make sense. I do not want to become accustom to all these thing becoming the norm. But attacking our elected President that has our best interest at heart is not the solution to our problems. We have to all speak out and take our Government back from those who think they can lead...not to bad mouth our President who has our back. Bulllshit on him being in the pocket of the 1%.
