PRISTINA, Kosovo — Thousands of ethnic Albanians braved low temperatures and a cold wind in Kosovo's capital Pristina to welcome former President Bill Clinton on Sunday as he attended the unveiling of an 11-foot (3.5-meter) statue of himself on a key boulevard that also bears his name.

Clinton is celebrated as a hero by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority for launching NATO's bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999 that stopped the brutal Serb forces' crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians.

This is his first visit to Kosovo since it declared independence from Serbia last year.

Many waved American, Albanian and Kosovo flags and chanted "USA!" as the former president climbed on top of a podium with his poster in the background reading "Kosovo honors a hero."

I could see how you could confuse it with Syria, in such a case, sure.

We weren't blowing up Kosovars because the Kosovar government blew up Kosovars. No we blew up Serbs becuase the Serbian government was blowing up Kosovars. And while the UN didn't back this up, we did at least have NATO on board, and it could have bene argued to be a logical extension of the UN-sanctioned action in Bosnia-Herzegovina .

But now that the poster brought up the subject of "Syria", it does seem to have some relevance.

Yes, I can see some relevance.

People were actually grateful for U.S. military strikes? Wow! That would surprise a lot of people to know that, huh?

And, by the way, I agree with you, Tx4obama.

One, lamenting the US' lack of ability to cram whatever we want through the world body is... well, that's pretty tacky, yeah.

Two, we're not exactly cherubs on the security council, ourselves.

Three, it's not like we've ever been constrained by the UNSC anyway.

if you want to argue that the idea of having five militaristic imperial nations, out of a body of 192 nations and three observer states, having sole and absolute authority over who gets to use military force, when, and where... yeah, that's a bad idea. Got a better one, though? 'Cause i've been trying to figure out that puzzle for years.

What was that old saying Ann Richards used to say about a hit dog barking? I can't quite remember it. But I'm just trying to figure out why people were grateful for U.S. military strikes?
