Burning Man 2013, in photos – By Mark Morford

This was my 10th burn, and it was easily the most intense, chaotic, impossibly frenetic and teemingly busy, and also ridiculous, and fantastic, and wonderful, and exhausting, and difficult to track or orient, of any I can remember, due to the sheer numbers, the id-squishing pulse of the place.

The weather was perfect; hot days, warm nights, not too many dust storms and a nice, hard playa surface thanks to heavy rains a couple weeks prior to opening the gates. The art was some of the best I’ve seen on the playa, ever. The revelers, all 70,000 of them (the largest ever, by far, covering 5 square miles), were sort of insane.

In the Gallery above, you’ll find nearly 90 of my favorite shots from the 2013 burn. Full disclosure: I missed a ton. I missed a great many dazzling night shots, flame-throwing things, art cars, and 500 more theme camps with astonishing, hilarious, stupid, or otherwise brilliant offerings (if you really want a taste, go download the free Time to Burn iOS app, and scan through the 2013 events and camp names). I didn’t shoot any people or portraits because that’s not really my thing and I’m not exactly a pro newspaper/staff photographer (they’re aren’t many left, sadly), and I don’t want to deal with getting reprint permissions.

I even missed the burn of the Man itself because I was watching it with friends and loved ones from atop an RV back in my own camp, sipping wine and champagne mixed with who knows what else, and it was glorious that way, and sort of perfect, and I didn’t want to suffer the grokked-out hordes just to get a shot that you can find 100 other places. I humbly trust you’ll be OK with that.

I think I met Mark in '03 at the Garage Mahal Camp. I haven't been in several years, but I do miss being in Black Rock City. It is without question one of the best parties on the planet.

Cheers!

You don't need to go to burning man, you can choose to live your life like that a little every day.
