(NEW YORK) -- Michelle Obama helped kick off the 2013 U.S. Open Saturday, telling an audience of kids that she grew up in a Chicago community without tennis but eventually forced her children to play it because its a lifelong sport.
The first lady, who was introduced by Serena Williams, used the opportunity of Arthur Ashe Kids Day, which launches the U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y., to promote her Lets Move campaign . . .
Mrs. Obama said she grew up in a community where tennis wasnt played, on Chicagos South Side.
When I was your age, I didnt have tennis role models, I didnt live in a community where there were any tennis courts, and quite frankly I dont think I knew a single person when I was young who even knew how to play tennis, she said.
Obama praised the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for partnering with her Lets Move childrens health campaign and pledging to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars, build thousands of courts, train thousands of tennis instructors, and teach the game to hundreds of thousands more kids through summer and after-school programs . . .
. . . she said the sport was a great way to improve the body and mind and that she pushed her daughters, Sasha and Malia, to learn to play so they wouldn't struggle with it like she did when she first took to a court.
'Youre going to learn things like hard work, teamwork, discipline. Thats why playing sports is so important, and thats what sports teaches you,' she said.
'It teaches you that if you keep on practicing, and giving 100 per cent to anything you do, you will get better at it, and thats not just true on the tennis court, but thats also true in the classroom . . .'

It was a popular and rather commonplace expression of black pride when I was a kid.
I imagine that fist-pumping is even more common at a tennis match; a sports thing, rather than a political or social statement.

The girls look like lovely tall drinks, particularly Malia. She's almost as tall as her mom.
Love Michelle's top. I wonder where she got it.
Edited to add that I should have read all posts. There's the top. LOL!!!

(15,262 posts)Possessive of the singular Lady is Lady's, not Ladies, the plural. I assume we still have just one.

Seriously, then it would be Ladies' instead for the plural possessive.
. . . three in particular.
Is it that hard to recognize the tongue-in-cheek reference?
