The GOP essentially believes that health care is a privilege that no one is entitled to unless they pay for it and have worked for it or have earned it in some way. Another part of that belief system is the idea that people who caused their disease should not be treated. So diseases like type II diabetes should be paid for by the patients themselves. People who have not taken care of themselves and gotten heart disease, certain cancers and diseases where they have needlessly exposed themselves are also part of this triaged group.
It is part of their personal responsibility meme. So the best advice is just do not get sick or risk yourself with questionable behavior.

(1,957 posts)For all the ways they are trying to stop rules, regulations, safety issues, inspections that make many jobs unsafer than they should be, air quality not as clean as it could be, foods certainly not as safe with all the chemicals they use and the fewer staff they have(and keep cutting back) to inspect the meats, the produce. For all those trees that chop down taking away natural filters that make breathing problems even worse or the way they try not to focus on the pollution of our water sources or the huge bodies of water contaminated by oil spills and illegal dumping that they turn a blind eye to, it seems they are more guilty of helping along issues that can make a person sick in the first place. Sadly they are the only ones who get great health care at a bargain price. on the one hand, and help screw our healthcare with the other.

(13,390 posts)Eating, smoking, drinking, professional choices, etc. are part of our cultural norms. We stumbled upon the causes by happenstance and it's another instance of privileged blaming people who have unfortunate genes, inadvertently chosen a risky profession, made some regrettable choices.... Violence is also a part of our culture. Of course, war injuries are a function of politics. And, sometimes people are born with disabilities.
Disabilities are natural phenomena that exist largely because we have the "best healthcare technology in the world." People may look down on our personal contributions, but they don't realize that they are TABs (Temporarily Able-Bodied) with their biological records of bad behavior.

(10,602 posts)GOP code talk indicates that they do believe in triaging the sick based on personal responsibility. That idea would be part of any of their health care plans. It is a different form of means testing. And behind closed doors they are really serious about such an idea.

(39,215 posts)a chemical soup in the well water in farm country. She did nothing to get their hate and neither did I - I drank water. But the rich farmer on the hill used the chemicals without regard to any damage. Today most of Iowa uses bottled water or are on a community water system. But back then they were not even testing water unless you used it in a business. That is how we found out the well water was so bad years after it was too late.
