No one can deny that Santorum has fired up the religious right and rest of the extremist GOP base, something Romney has been unable to do.
When all is said and done, Romney will walk away with the GOP nomination.
He'll need to pick a running mate who will draw in the nutso base and I can't think of anyone else more suited for the role than Santorum.
It's a match made in heaven (or hell, if you believe in that sort of thing).

(692 posts)He's smart enough to have figured out that Obama was certainly going to win reelection. Huck's been waiting for 2016.

(8,556 posts)Huck grew up in a family of very modest means. He's making lots of money now and life for him is pretty good. No reason to jeopardize that when you don't have a great shot anyway.

Santorum's theology of the outrageous:
"The candidate's latest over-the-top remarks, this time on Obama and climate change, could come back to haunt him." more...

(8,556 posts)I don't think Santorum has 'fired up' anybody. He has the support of certain segments of the base by default, because the rest of the field can't really capture it for their own reasons. He's not a juggernaut, more the last man left that they are capable of supporting. He's got plenty of baggage of his own, as we have seen.
There are plenty of other choices that would satisfy that end of the base without the record of statements and alienating positions that Santorum has.

(11,175 posts)Romney has to know that a big chunk of the base is uneasy about his religion. To reassure them, he needs a running mate from a mainstream Protestant denomination. No Catholics need apply.
To placate the conservatives who call Romney a RINO, he may well emulate last cycle's "RINO" nominee, McCain, and pick a hard-right extremist for VP. I think Jim DeMint might be a possibility. He'd help to offset the anti-Mormon feeling that's especially strong in the South.

(8,021 posts)Romney has to placate that chunk of base. Santorum absolutely will not fill that bill. Not sure about DeMint, but I can see a choice that will work well in Southern states.

(50,557 posts)Seeing as how Santorum and Romney have been violating the Eleventh Commandment toward each other ever since the primary season started, there's WAY too much bad blood between them.
I can see Romney (or Santorum, depending on who GOTV the best on Super Tuesday) plus either Chris Christie, Scott Walker or Jan Brewer. The Republicans see their best chance of success in attacking unions (pick either Christie or Walker, who they can sell as having had his term as governor sabotaged by the demonic unions) and immigrants (which would give us Brewer). Whichever one their focus groups see as the worst threat, will decide who the VP slot will be filled by.
