Gainesville, FL Girls leave school after racist rant on Youtube

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/21/gainesville-high-school-s_n_1290929.html?ref=black-voices&ir=Black%20Voices

I don't know how many saw this video. I just watched it this afternoon. My verdict? I don't think it's what it looks like.

These girls are from a different generation. I never say the N-word but they go to a school which is 60% Black. I am sure they hear that word being said left and right and very casually.

Their rant is more about class than race. They are decrying the dropout rate of the majority of Blacks in their school. The more vocal girl says she has a Black male friend who is the child of two surgeons. So she is looking beyond color (she's half-Cuban, by the way) but is quite insensitive about those from the lower end.

I feel a frustration about certain subgroups myself. It's not racist. It's wondering how anything will change if we just scream 'racism' any time someone brings up dysfunctional behavior like dropping out of school and having children way too young.

*Edit: Being poor does not mean that a young person is destined to drop out or make babies but since we cannot do social engineering, how do we have higher expectations for people in this category?

I'm not entirely sure I can turn that into "someone brings up dysfunctional behavior like dropping out of school and having children way too young." and leave it there. I think there just might be a bit of racism in here too.

a subset of a group that preserves the group properties of closure & associativity, contains an identity element and a unique inverse for each element. (Mathematics)

That's the only racially untainted definition I can think of.

When a demographic is minimized, trivialized or insulted, and one means used of insulting that demographic is through racially charged insults, it is, by its very definition, racism.

"These girls are too young to know better..."
Being too young, to stupid, to poor, or too vapid to know better is not an excuse; rather, it is simply another problem (in addition to racism) they will have grow out of or accept the consequences for.

Those girls BARELY had a grasp of the English language themselves, yet they had the audacity to make fun of the people in their school that didn't speak like they did.

And if they wanted to speak constructively about girls getting pregnant early, they certainly had that opportunity to. They didn't. Instead they chose to lambaste cultures that are different than their own.

I'm really amazed that I'm seeing defense of this despicable racism here.

have used the "n" word no matter how many times I heard it being used around me. There is an understanding that certain terms have different meaning when used by the members of society who have privilege.

The girls not only said what they did, they then put their bigotry up for the entire world to see. Disgusting behavior. And what "certain subgroups" do you have a problem with and how does their behavior affect you? How does the behavior of "certain subgroups" affect these girls such that they had to go on a public rant?

The kids they see dropping out of school and making kids are in a deadend situation and creating another deadend generation. They don't see it as okay and are disgusted by that behavior. The fact that the subgroup doing it happens to be Black is besides the point.

I'm not sure I am in a position to assume my experiences from 30 or 40 years ago are at all relevant to how high schoolers perceive things and act today. I'm not trying to condone it any way, because I think its fair to say that the black kids I went to school with several decades ago wouldn't have used the 'n' word the way its used today. And while I'm reluctant to criticize the general coarsening of speech and conduct that has occurred in my lifetime for fear that I'll sound like my parents sounded when I was growing up, it is a fact that as the times change, so do behaviors, and not always for the best.

I sometimes go through period were am just mad at the world, all the shooting in the black neighbor hood(I know it has a lot to do with the racist drug wars), the fights that predictably happens outside snicker stores every Christmas from people trying to buy the latest Jordan's, the high rate of teenage pregnancies, high dropout rates etc etc etc. We need to look at our selves as a people and do something to get our house in order

The main difference between me and those girls is that I am more sensitive with the subject and I will never ever put myself of tape trashing any group of people

To be honest, I couldn't watch it all. When these two morons couldn't use basic arithmetic to determine the percentage of "whites" in their own school, it was obvious that they'd have nothing intelligent to say. That they couldn't connect the dots between race and poverty may be the fault of the education system, but it is just painful to watch such uninformed hubris.

If all they were going for was to be on 'youtube' then they'll have lots of support. Thanks for posting.
