It seams as if the culture wars are kind of going our way more than usual lately, and it's bringing out the nutjobs on the other side to show the rest of America just how nutjobby they are.
Besides, ultimately time is on our side. No one but the most extreme racists still rail against interracial relationships/marriage, and the smart conservatives of today distance themselves from that mindset of many years ago. Gay marriage - whether sooner or later - will be the same thing. Only the most extreme homophobes will rail against it, and even smart conservatives will distances themselves from the mindset of conservatives today.
Ironically, it's the inability of people to think more deeply about history that allow conservatism to survive. While most people may know the dry facts behind it, it's laughable and hard to imagine there being large groups of people against, say, Women's Suffrage. We can slough it off with comments like, "Man, people back then," etc., and conservatives will join in. A little more deep thought, and people would realize that it was conservatives who were against Suffrage, and maybe in a few of them, a few synapses might make the connection that it's always been conservatives against everything we take for granted these days, and a few more synapses to connect it to present day. Luckily for conservatives, that doesn't happen.
