Romney Warns Spending Cuts Will Slow Recovery

Mitt Romney warned in Michigan on Tuesday that if Congress cuts the budget too quickly, the economy could contract, a popular idea with economists but a huge departure from Republican orthodoxy that insists spending cuts will boost growth overall.

"If you just cut, if all you're thinking about doing is cutting spending, as you cut spending you'll slow down the economy," Romney said. "So you have to, at the same time, create pro-growth tax policies."

NBC, which reported the above quote, reached out to small government group Club For Growth, whose vice president for government affairs, Andy Roth, was unsurprisingly upset.

"It's hogwash," he said. "It confirms yet again that Romney is not a limited government conservative."

The cartoons and ads write themselves

Santorum, on the other hand, is effed up to the point of ludicrous. You can only go so far with Sacred Sperm Santorum.

5. When Democrats say this...

...they are hammered by the "liberal media" as tax and spend liberals.

When RMoney says it they will agree with his "wise" and "tough, principled stance."

Facts will never enter the spin zone...

Same as it ever was.

It is classic Keynesian policy. Romney is just telling the truth...I guess I'm surprised but the guy is so quirky it's hard to know what the hell he is thinking on any given day...makes me wonder why he is even bothering to run for POTUS...

8. What's amusing is that Romney's spokesweasel immediately tried to walk it back.

From the story that TPM linked to: A Romney spokesperson, commenting on Romney's comments, stated in part: "As (Romney) made clear in his economic plan, he believes that spending cuts that reduce the size of government and balance the budget are crucial to economic growth and job creation." (from the MSNBC story)

When I read the headline, I was expecting to see a quotation from one of his campaigns in Massachusetts. Back then he described himself as a "progressive" (to be fair, though, I don't think he ever said "severely progressive&quot .

It is surprising that the Massachusetts Mitt got out of his cage and made a sensible comment. What's not surprising is that National Mitt (the severely conservative one) immediately sent his minions out with nets to capture Massachusetts Mitt and try to make the voters forget they ever saw him.

You don't see that every day. I expect it will cost him some support.

10. He is still advocating for that belief that cutting taxes for the wealthy actually raises revenue..

When Kennedy did that it actually did increase revenues some.....When Reagan did it revenues fell and Debt mounted.. Every Republican after has done and said pretty much the same thing since and every single one has proven it just does not work......Revenues come from taxes...Simple fact..Want more revenue then raise some taxes.... Poppy bush had to come to that understanding and so went back on his "read my lips" statement and all Republicans swear that is why he lost to Clinton, but the fact remains that he HAD to raise taxes....and as dishonest as that man was he was still the best Republican president since IKE..

You've stepped in it again.

And if this is you trying to tack back to the center after you found yourself way out on the right, it's a really pathetic attempt.
