Yes, it's free, but just as importantly, a paid version does not exist, so there is no nagging, ever. I have used it for years and never had a problem.

(4,787 posts)so it isn't a replacement for an anti-virus program. (i.e. It's a great program but you run it after-the-fact to look for malware that made it through.)

(7,720 posts)recommend the free version of Microsoft Security Essentials and the free version of Malware Bytes. The complement each other. The first is a primary anti-virus peogram while the latter seeks out and gets rid of malware.

Use Malware plus the AVG free or the Microsoft version.

(21,132 posts)I use AVG on beefier devices. I like it the most, but it eats more resources than I'd like on older systems. Older stuff I default to MSE.

(11,029 posts)Loved it about 5 years ago - switched to Security Essentials last year and with Windows 8 - SE is built in as Windows Defender, so no additional protection is necessary - why they never figured on doing this before i don't know.
Never use Norton or McAfee - not only shouldn't you have to pay for anti-virus protection, but I've run into several situations where they actually block all Internet traffic to force you to upgrade or renew. Nasty programs.

(21,132 posts)McAfee and Norton aren't even as good as the free ones in my opinion.

(26,355 posts)They have a free version, though like most of the free anti-virus providers, they'll try to upsell you.

(146,317 posts)and download Microsoft Security Essentials. That will do for viruses and most malware.
If you avoid questionable websites, and have that running, you'll be OK.
You might also download MalwareBytes. It does a good job of blocking and removing malware.
