I just found out a friend of mine was beaten so badly on Friday that he had to have surgery. I was wondering if anyone heard any local news about this? My friend happens to be transgender, which is why it may have made the news.

(21,506 posts)I went to middle school and high school in OKC. I used to go out with my friends to the "gay park" where supposedly the gays hung out so we could beat the shit out of them. It was the cool thing to do.
Fortunately we never found anyone wearing the gay sign to beat. I feel guilty enough for going along forget what i would feel to this day if we had actually ever beat someone.
In my junior year of high school i moved to San Fransisco where I was thrown into contact with gay people almost daily. It was a huge eye opener for me and changed my view of gay people forever.
I went from going along with the gay bashing to despising my previous behavior.
OKC is a fucked up place or was when I lived there many years ago. Thank god I got out.

(14,040 posts)and it wasn't until I moved to PA at the age of 12 that my attitude changed towards race. I'm thankful (now) that we moved when we did so I didn't hold the same beliefs about black people that my parents do.
I'm glad we all have the capacity to change and some of us do so when presented the opportunity. When I found out about my friend, the first thing I had to ask myself is what was he doing in Oklahoma. I can't imagine it's a hotbed for transgender equality.

Fwiw, OKC has a very vibrant GLBTQ community. The gay district is one of the best places to hang out in OKC.
I'll keep my eyes out for stories.
