I love this story about the Saco, Maine police department. Despite a crazy lady ramming three of their cruisers and trying to kill them, not one of them fired his gun at her. When cops do their job right, they deserve to be noticed.
The worst any cop said was: "Whoa!"

I will say all but one of my interactions with the police have been very good, and the not so good one could have been a little better if I'd responded a little differently. When they have been over here, they love on my dogs to boot.
Most recently I called them at 11pm when I got home from work and discovered an asshole neighbor had once again taken it upon himself to change my landscaping. The officer who called me back was very people smart. He allowed me to rant with generally supportive comments, listened closely, and asked astute questions to try to determine the underlying issues. Because he didn't jump to conclusions and asked appropriate questions, he learned that said neighbor has decided he's going to help a friend buy my house for half it's market value by harassing me for several years. I've been afraid to call the police due to bad experiences in Massachusettss plus the neighbor's already attempted to kill both my horses and my dogs in ways that would have made it appear to be my negligence, could have caused other people serious injury or death and would likely put me into bankruptcy. So instead of directly approaching the neighbor, he said he'd file a trespassing and harassment complaint, drive by to asssess the layout of our properties and step up patrols of our street.

(12,022 posts)according to another newspaper article, so chances were he couldn't tell race when he chose not to shoot.
Some additional background: the reporter who wrote this column is a real lefty who's always ranting about the GOP and our stupid governor, so he's not one to automatically worship the police. I think he felt police should be recognized for just doing their job right.

(14,040 posts)Meaning, really, all we do hear about are the bad cops out there. We never hear about the acts like this, that as the reporter wrote, probably happen all the time. Because not shooting someone isn't sensational, we don't hear about it often.
