in the private sector.
It was an ongoing battle to catch up.
Then bu$h crashed the economy - twice - and then the government worker were being paid more than the private sector for ther same job.
The being overpaid BS shifted from the union workers to the "incompetent, lazy, worthless" government workers. And privatizing and contracting out "Well paid" government jobs, was all the rage to "save the tax payers money".
Somehow the contractors were costing than government workers, but the people actually doing the job had less real take home pay. Often with little or no benefits. But the contracting companies could afford to pay their management 6 figure incomes.

Join your local Democratic Club so that you may be able to become a delegate on her behalf.

I don't think there is any candidate as strong as Warren.

Clinton may think she has a chance, but she is weak on a number of issues including the Iraq War, defense spending, privacy, women's rights (in that she was on the Walmart board years ago when Walmart discriminated against women), and all round is a Wall Street, machine candidate.

We need to make sure that Warren proves that she can raise a lot of money. That is what an experienced and in my view very trustworthy member of the Democratic Party told me. Clinton has a lot of money. Warren doesn't. We have to change that. No one should do more than he or she can, but we need to steadily show that Warren can raise money -- enough money to run.

I would add that, when someone asks "Why does that union guy have all those benefits when I don't," he's asking the wrong question. He should be asking "How come I don't have them too?"

Just asking the first question impels people to attack the unions, while asking the second one impels them to join one.

How can some feel like "middle class" unless half the people are worse off? Unfortunately, that creates a group within the working poor that wants to cause strife to as many less fortunate as possible. For the same reason they also need to reach up to the next rung of the ladder and pull those folks down to within stomping distance.

I call them "Barstool Republicans", people who struggle to make ends meet working in a dead-end job, then get off work and channel talking points straight out of the mouth of Steve Forbes.

You, too, can have obscene wealth, if you work hard and save money! Heck, in just 79 years, you can put away a cool million (if you earn $27000/yr and can subsist on $1200/mo...and, have no emergencies, and never get sick, and don't get laid off...geez, what's everyone complaining about?!?)

Hey, try not to upset the wealth carrot apple cart, wouldya?

soused right-wing society wherein almost every act of government is for the welfare of large corporations, the oligarchs, and the uber-wealthy to the detriment of the general welfare. It is rather amazing that we the people have continued to elect those who promote the erosion of our societal welfare.

I'm not claiming any wild conspiracy here, just that over the course of 30 years, even a 1% underestimate of inflation every year adds up to an additional $10,000 drop in income: in such a case, 1982 inflation-adjusted income today would be $42,000, and today's income would be $29,000 - a $13,000 drop, not a $3,000 drop.

Actually, you have made a valid point. We all know that "inflation" calculations are based on too many things that are not necessities, and the necessities are used meagerly in the calculations. I do not know if your calculations are right and I am not inclined to check them out, but the premise is sound.

and how some people would claim that they earn too much and it's not right and it's all the unions' faults. My way of thinking is that the USPS is a great example of how it should be done; the Postmaster earns a lot less than your typical CEO and that difference is reflected in the employees' paychecks. It's not perfect inside the Post Office but it's a lot better than most jobs.
