BBC News, Cairo
There are pools of blood all over the field hospital. Many of the injured are in bad shape. Some have parts of their head missing - taken out by bullets.
The doctor here, Hesham Ibrahim, says that in the past eight hours more than 100 have been killed - most by bullet wounds to the head and chest. We saw many such wounds. More that 1,000 injured people are here, the doctor says.
The battle has been raging since last night and all morning. The air is thick with tear gas and people are vomiting. We can still hear automatic gunfire.
They closed the doors here at the hospital as they could not accept more wounded, but the ambulances were still arriving.

Aid to Egypt Can Keep Flowing, Despite Overthrow, White House Decides
The Obama administration has concluded it is not legally required to determine whether the Egyptian military engineered a coup détat in ousting President Mohamed Morsi, a senior administration official said Thursday, a finding that will allow it to continue to funnel $1.5 billion in American aid to Egypt each year.
The legal opinion, submitted to the White House by lawyers from the State Department and other agencies, amounts to an escape hatch for President Obama and his advisers, who had concluded that cutting off financial assistance could destabilize Egypt at an already fragile moment and would pose a threat to neighbors like Israel.
The senior official did not describe the legal reasoning behind the finding, saying only, The law does not require us to make a formal determination as to whether a coup took place, and it is not in our national interest to make such a determination.

(35,568 posts)who I've respected and followed for years, I think it's much more complicated than that. Some from the Brookings Institute was just catching hell from both sides for trying to simplify things like that.
cali
(114,904 posts)Maybe I'm simplifying but it looks to me like the military engineered a coup, railroaded Morsi, and are murdering people. Sissi is a strongman and this looks like anything but democracy to me.

(35,568 posts)Are you just waking up? I'm just about to go to bed I think. I honestly don't know what's going on because I'm getting it from all sides except half the picture's missing because it's in Arabic and I don't have the same energy I had 2 years ago. And too many external players got involved to thwart all the progress. Since then it's been revolution, counter-revolution, revolution and I'm lost. The MB haven't been angels throughout this and Morsi was awful. One of the last things he did, that caused a huge uproar, was saying he'd let people go fight against Syria with the rebels. That wasn't the smartest thing to say or the right time. Sissi sounds like just what you said and an ass to boot.
I don't know anymore Cali. I don't even have the energy to follow this. They started a revolution and it's still got a ways to go. I just hope it will be the least bloody possible with the best possible outcome for the people.

I can only see the situation in #Egypt going from bad to worse. I see no near resolution of this conflict. I am not optimistic.
Dear Twitter douchebags: Tweet at me that I'm justifying the massacre or blaming the victims = block with extreme prejudice. Thank you.

(114,904 posts)and off to bed with you, so have a restful sleep.
As for Egypt, Catherina, it just looks like the same old same old. the military, particularly from what I know about the Egyptian military, is a dangerous ally in a revolution. The military mindset, backed with all the power, flows toward tyranny.
I didn't trust the military when they ousted Morsi. I trust them even less now.
cali
(114,904 posts)and subsequent actions demonstrate pretty fucking clearly that Sissi and his crew don't want democracy.

(35,568 posts)Let me know if you're not because in no way do I mean to disrespect any information we have so far.
The situation on my Egypt feed is one of utter grief from both sides. These tweets are from original Jan25 revolution revolutionaries and independent reporters on the ground, with the exception of Ilad who's not on the ground but pulls it in from the same Jan25 people and relays information coming across in Arabic, from the ground.
Another video purportedly from behind Rab3a's barricades of MOI shooting heavily towards the protesters: http://on.fb.me/18ICKOc #Egypt
I haven't seen a single video or picture or report saying the army is directly involved, unless I missed something this is all MOI. #Egypt
Friend @mosaaberizing who's one of the most professional photojournalists I know is down there, says MB only have rocks & fireworks. #Egypt
Official death toll (at 21 so far) is based on bodies in morgues.. Many bodies still in field hospitals, getting out.. #NasrCity #Egypt
According to #Egypt's Health Ministry: 21 dead,180 injured in anti-millitary protest in #Cairo. MB is claiming 100's. I can confirm 26 now
Official sources on both sides lie. I'm only trusting independent individual sources on the ground. #Egypt
I don't want to hear any statements from any MB leaders. #Egypt
I don't want to tune in to Aljazeera either. They seem to only see blood in one direction. #Egypt
Iyad has a long history of objectivity and sympathies, for lack of a better word, for the MB. He's one of the best, top resources for factual information. I don't always agree with his political opinions but as far as facts and objectively reporting what's happening, he's excellent.
#Libya is now exploding in anti-MB and anti-Islamist protests, I'm reading that some party HQs are being attacked by protesters.

#Egypt was put on a suicide path in March 2011. The rest is all details.
They announced at #Rabaa that there was a car that needed to be moved so ambulances could come through. They were told: its owner was killed.
#Egypt media stopped Ramadan shows to cover the pro-army protests but are showing comedy shows right now. So fair & professional.
If you want to know who's really running the show in #Egypt, just watch who the TV & media suck up to. It's very clear, it's El-Sisi.
Let's be clear.This isn't a pro-MB sit-in/demo.I'm looking for the faces of my anti-MB friends/fam among the pictures of the dead/wounded.
Inside makeshift morgue crowd is chanting "Sisi you murderer" and "the people demand the execution of the killer"
More bodies coming out. So far eight have come out in this group pic.twitter.com/w0LeSNVg5g
#Fact: Last night's clashes were between #Morsi supporters and police forces- not the army or military police. #Egypt
It seems that #Sisi is just as politically incompetent as #Morsi and #Tantawi were. God help us all. #Egypt
Grief and rage as more and more bodies emerge pic.twitter.com/Jt10bmtElx
AntiCoup Alliance updates death toll from clashes with police in Nasr City to 120. Min of Health says 20 people killed. #egypt
Do you know what happens to an Egyptian TV crew if they try to film at an MB rally ? Something close to mob-lynching
Last RT: This is true, unfortunately whenever some #Egypt media came near Rab3a they were almost torn apart. Happened with @TheMiinz.
Quite concerning to hear that makeshift hospitals are unable to respond to rising number of casualties.
Just to clarify, ~25 was the number of bodies at Rab3a's morgue; more & more are being brought in. Total reported toll 100+. #Egypt
This is no longer political and I refuse to enter in any political discussions. Egyptian mentality is heading towards a humanitarian crisis.
It seems that whenever we're covering deaths on one side we're helping a politician on that side. Down with them all. #Egypt
There are still people who are blaming the US for this mess. Typical knee jerk reaction. Fact is, both sides in #Egypt are blaming the US.
Anti-MB rally in #Tunis @AsmaGhribi: Slogans from #brahmi : today will be the downfall of #ennahdha #tunisia ..
Last RT (AR) claims clashes started with MB tried to march out towards October 6 bridge and have a new sit-in area... #Egypt
What a sad, terrible, awful mess.

(13,616 posts)and let the mideast choke on having to solve it's own problem. Morsi is a scum, but he won the election, and needs to sort out the mess he made by trying to usurp more power than he was allowed (trying to kiss Hamas ass in the process), by the same token, this is a coup a coup a coup, and we have no business trying to help those out.
cali
(114,904 posts)and the over $1 billion in aid can continue to flow. Whether Morsi is scum or not, he's being railroaded by Sissi, and you're right, it's a coup a coup a coup.
