What really pisses me off re the RW spin re black men in America and Trayvon Martin

Last edited Mon Aug 5, 2013, 07:12 PM - Edit history (1)

Trayvon Martin comes from a two parent family
Both parents (though divorced like so many others) were involved in his upbringing
His brother is a college student
His mother has a Masters degree
They have done everything right and yet all we hear about are single mothers having too many children, committing crimes and killing one another

Enough with these diversionary tactics - call them what they are - racist scumbags obfuscating the reality of their gun culture and the slaughter of an innocent teenager.
Don't buy their bullshit!!

"XOMG, he smoked weed! He was caught writing WTF on the wall! He tweeted about drinking robitussin! He had a picture of himself with GRILLS! OHNOES!" as though this obviously meant that he was destined to be dead or in jail by the time he was 20.

At my high school my lily white friends and I thought it was fun to dress up like crips and go to the mall. There were ALL KINDS of drugs... I never heard about heroin and ADD drugs weren't in yet, but weed was everywhere and I heard about 'tussin, powder cocaine, acid, shrooms, and ALL THE BOOZE. Graffiti wasn't common, but there were kids who went around tagging. And you know what? Most of these kids got into 4-year schools right out of high school and they're professionals today.

It's a shitty and racist double standard to point to a black kid doing something "bad" and make it like it's the sign of a terrible human being when a white kid doing the exact same things would be considered "typical."

Most college kids and professionals would have been in prison ages ago. The drug laws were to lock up young black men and it's that simple. The private prisons rose with those laws - just follow the money.

Even heroin and crack and meth.

These drugs destroy families, true, but so does taking people out of the community for 10 years and dropping them back on the street with nothing to show for themselves. And militarizing the police just creates antagonism in the community.

(It's not just about life in the 'hood, either. There are the same problems with white people in Redding, and it creates broken families and generational poverty, and makes poor people more susceptible to being crime victims themselves.)

There were tons of drugs on campus...everything from weed to heroin. One ever went to jail...except a black guy who sold weed. The white heroin dealer did not.

... use of the phrase "those people"

in order to set that murdering scum Zimmerman free, one would have had to conclude that the murdering scum reasonably feared Trayvon Martin.

I believe the jury had to believe that black men are drug crazed and randomly violent/ murderous ... if one accepts (or worse holds dear) that right wing meme ... the jury could understand and relate to the murderous scum Zimmerman fearing for his life.

I believed that was the defenses entire plan ... play to the racist fear of black men ... and everything would fall into place.

It did. I was deeply saddened and alternately enraged, but not surprised.

I really think you have to do some mental gymnastics to turn a skinny teenage kid into a big hulking brute who can kill a martial arts trained adult man with a sidewalk. But racism allowed people to do those mental gymnastics. There is no justice.

pernicious and ugly line of thought.
Somehow the "black community" is responsible for the behavior of all it's members.
If an innocent man is shot by a black man it is because the "black community" can't control it's men.
If the innocent man is black, he is partially at fault because he did not do enough to control the other black men.
If the black man is shot by a white man, well there aren't really any innocent black men after all.

Because if there's anything the Bush-voting, Palin-supporting, Limbaugh-listening, Fox News-watching wing nuts value it's education, academic achievement, and knowledge!

It's good to know that I'm not the only one that's noticed the blatant double standard when it comes this topic. Most Zimmerman supporting RWers can barely hide their contempt for education and the professionals that try to provide it. They constantly refer to public school teachers as "greedy union thugs". They look down on most white people who worked hard to obtain an education, however, these same people are quick to judge minorities on their educational achievements. Could you imagine if Barack Obama attended multiple colleges in a half dozen years in order to obtain a bachelor's degree?

It's like in the 90's, and early 2000's when several black Basketball players decided to forgo college and jump to the NBA after their senior year of high school. Remember how many people were up in arms over Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James becoming instant millionaires straight out of high school? Remember how these same people ignored, and continue to ignore the fact that the vast majority of pro hockey and baseball players also don't have college degrees? Remember how they also ignored the fact that during that decade Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, and Jennifer Capriati were competing in major tennis tournaments in their training bras? (Also overlooking the fact that Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi NEVER even graduated high school?!)

I mean goddamn, Sarah Palin, Rick Perry, and Steve Stockman are a collection of fucking idiots, Kristi Noem got elected to the house with only a high school diploma, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity dropped out of school, Dana Perino didn't know (until recently) about the Bay of Pigs, or the Cuban Missile Crisis, Harriet Myers and Monica Goodling are the products of religious diploma mills! Not to mention all the other willfully ignorant and terminally stupid people that compose this nation's modern conservative movement. And none of it matters to the average RW joe sixpack! The same people who will give those I mentioned in this paragraph a pass for poor achievement are the same racist morons who will put the academic achievements (or lack thereof) of minorities under a microscope.
