5 teens charged with using a weapon of mass destruction for prank with household chemicals

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Five juveniles are facing serious felony charges on Thursday morning, following what police say was the creation a weapon of mass destruction made from household chemicals that damaged a home in Lexington.

Police say that just before midnight on Wednesday, they got the call of an explosion on the front porch of a house on Doncaster Court, in the Rookwood neighborhood off Bryan Station Road.

As a result of the explosion, the front door of the home received some damage, including the glass being knocked out of a portion of it.

Police say there was a substantial chemical spray from the explosion, which originated from a bottle filled with a mixture of household chemicals.

Officials said that five teenagers, ages 13 to 15, mixed the chemicals in the bottle and left it at the door of the home as a prank.

"Especially since 9/11, lawmakers got very serious with the way they wrote laws. And if people are making weapons of mass destruction, whether it be full-on bombs or just overpressure devices in soda bottles, it's going to be taken very seriously," said Lexington Police Spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.

like the one that girl made and set off at school. This situation is much worse, though, because if you just leave it there without agitating it, when the unsuspecting person picks it up, it explodes in their hand.

EDIT: I see that it just went off on the porch and blew the glass out of the door. I assumed they left it there unagitated.

Less we forget we were once kids. This day in age the media tends to blows so many stories out of proportion. Law Enforcement in this case has failed our nation by placing a charge this serious on a prank. These teens whom pulled a simple (yes, over the top) prank which cause less damage then a fire cracker would have shouldn't have to worry about jail time... remember the good ol days when you had to worry about your momma whipping your butt? Perhaps we need to refocus our efforts and focus on more important issue's.

of WMD because it was a chemical bomb. This was not juvenile prank, it was a bomb. Somebody could have been seriously injured or even killed by the actions of these individuals.
