Petition for Obama to declare the landing sites of the Viking landers as national parks

If you would like to sign this petition, please go here

Petition Text:
Recently, members of the House of Representatives proposed the Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act, whereby all the Apollo landing sites would be designated as part of the United States National Park System and essentially put off-limits to exploitation by other countries or corporations.

WE THE PEOPLE had believed that this has done more good than bad, as this bill will prevent future generations from exploiting these historical sites, effectively wiping out a part of the high water mark of the humanity's space exploration.

Therefore, we request that Mr President will try to extend this bill to the landing sites of Viking landers by any means neccesary, to prevent future exploitation and to remind future generations to keep going to boldly explore and go where no person has gone before.

in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies does not allow countries to claim planets or part of planets. Sounds to me like claiming the landing areas as "national parks" puts a claim upon that property. The should be world heritage sites, but that would best be handled by the UN.

we need to spend time and energy focusing on our terrestrial national parks which are woefully underfunded.
