at least for immigrants with white skin... as long as you can look like us and talk like us your in...

if your skin is a different shade we might mix in your cuisine or your music, but your people pretty much remain in the fire not the pot.


and since African Americans have pretty much been on the outside since the get-go, those of us in the melting pot really can't fathom the view from there.

1. It's all about how well you assimilate into the dominant culture

Economically, linguistically, and in terms of social norms and attitudes.

2. it seems to be more than that though

if you are white, once you do all of those things you become indistinguishable from the rest - if you are not white then you are still identifiable as an "outsider"
