(15,953 posts)Romney still beats Obama there 49-36 among likely voters. Even Newt beats Obama by a similar margin in this poll. In a lot of other states, Newt polls lower than any other Republican against Obama, including even Ron Paul.

(62,444 posts)So, what you are saying is that Romney polls lower against Obama in Texas than McCain did.

(8,556 posts)Was McCain polling at 55 percent in February 2008? I don't know, maybe he was, but I doubt it. This poll still leaves 15 percent undecided. That will have to go somewhere on election day. Probably the undecideds will lean Obama but not be enough as to get him over the top.
Any Republican will win Texas, including even the Mittster. But the Republicans have a whole slew of other states they have to worry about.

(23,278 posts)How are texas primary electoral votes utilized in deciding a republican Primary Candidate?..a Lot of Texas Democrats are debating voting in the Republican primaries(since we,obviously, only have one Democrat per position-at least in my district)...just curious.

(145,619 posts)We still do not have a primary date. The earliest that the primary may be held is May 29 (the Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend).
Texas is an open primary type law which means that you can vote in either party's primary but then you can not vote in the other party's primary for future events during that election cycle. They stamp your voter registration card with the logo of the party you vote in and the data base will show which party you voted in.
If you vote in the GOP primary, then you are not eligible to attend the Democratic state convention or go to the Democratic national convention. The Democratic Party is going to be holding County/Senate Distrct Conventions to select delegates to the state convention in April and we will require every one to sign a pledge to vote for the Democratic candidate and not to vote in the GOP primary

(15,958 posts)How can we hold our "County/Senate District Conventions to select delegates to the state convention in April" when we won't have our primaries until the end of May?
Boy oh Boy the Texas GOP sure has F'ed up our Election process just so they could suppress voter turnout with their voter ID 'law' and then redistricting to boot to take away Democratic seats.
They have screwed everyone even their own voters.
Gothmog
(145,619 posts)The Democrats are skipping the precinct convention step and the delegates will be bound to support the eventual party nominee. Given that President Obama is not opposed, this will not be an issue for the Democrats.
I am not sure how the GOP will deal with the issue

(22,298 posts)are we all just showing up to the state convention?
Gothmog
(145,619 posts)When we have county/senate district conventions, you will be broken up into precincts probably based on existing precincts and voting results. Each precinct will elect its allocation of delegates to the state convention and then the county/senate district convention will elect the unallocated delegates. This is just like how it was done in 2008. I was the parliamentarian and on the nominations committee for our county senate district convention back in 2008. The only difference is that we will all be voting for President Obama and so there will not be credentials fights on the allocation of delegates.
I hope that this helps.

(23,278 posts)This election is highly contested in multiple areas...esp Rep Lt Governor (one of the more powerful state positions). We all pretty much realize that until Texas Democrats seriously GOTV (We DO have the urban majority),we will continue to see the likes of Rick Perry and Tom DeLay elected.

(145,619 posts)The religion issue will hurt Romney in Texas. Many Texas tea party types and southern baptists will not vote for a Mormon. They consider Mormons to be members of a cult and not christians. It was no accident that the head of a large Dallas church brought up this issue at the Value Voter event back in the fall.

Bizarre doesn't begin to describe this race, those running or those voting.

(145,619 posts)There is polling that shows that 20% of the GOP voters will never vote for a non-christian mormon. If the GOP gets worried that these voters are staying home, then it may have to spend some money in Texas.
