element of the American public, society, and government. Scathingly, but right on the button. Scathing, but apropos. A virulent pox will continue to infest America until this sinister element has been expunged, eradicated, or finds Jesus. No, Jesus is not the answer because so many who profess to love Jesus are among that sinister element. And sadly 22 states with right-wing legislatures and statehousess have effectively Zimmeranadised those itching to kill someone.

We need to have a national Trayvon Martin day to honor those murdered for the color of their skin.
A last straw, a catalyst, such as Rosa Parks was, only this time to stop the constant killing, with the perpetrators walking free to do it again.
A symbol, to help overcome the racism in this country. To make racism uncool. To make racially biased murder unacceptable by all.
How can we have equal rights in this country, when it is open season on certain people, based solely on the color of their skin?
To give meaning to Trayvon's death. Otherwise he, along with all the others murdered for the crime of being born Black, will have died in vain. And will keep on dieing in vain.

our fellow DU member polichick started a thread on this very point you raise:

Here is what polichick wrote:

Any Artists Here? We May Need A Symbol...

I'm thinking about a simple symbol people could wear daily as a small button that is instantly known to mean the wearer won't tolerate racism, sexism, anti-gay bigotry (or any other flat-earth, Christofascist bullshit).

The people destroying this country with fear and hatefulness are fewer in number, but much louder and more active than the majority. Maybe we need to be much more obvious and unified about our opposition to what's happening.

People feel comfortable driving around with huge Confederate flags waving from the beds of their trucks and that's not the only symbol meant to threaten people, but I'm not sure there's one identifiable symbol that says no to today's brand of fear and hatred.

(Unfortunately, the American flag really doesn't do it anymore.)

What do you think?

George Zimmerman Emerged From Hiding for Truck Crash Rescue

By Matt Gutman
July 22, 2013

George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue a family who was trapped in an overturned vehicle, police said today.

Zimmerman was one of two men who came to the aid of a family of four -- two parents and two children -- trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla. at approximately 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route Route 46, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where Zimmerman shot Martin.

By the time police arrived, two people - including Zimmerman - had already helped the family get out of the overturned car, the sheriff's office said. No one was reported to be injured.

collection on a subject.
I can't even pick a "favorite".
Poignant, so sad, and universally of the same opinion.

We are absolutely fucked in this country when it comes to the silent but powerful judgment made about your color the second you come through a door. I have said that for years. No need to amend it now.
It's also a "killer" judgment.

This will KEEP happening...

ALEC continues to write laws for every (especially Republican) General ASSembly across the nation.

They are reversing -
Civil Rights
Any progress in abortion/women's rights

They are promoting -

Rule by Male, White, Rich Republicans
Rule by Male, White, Rich Democrats
Rule over non- Male, Non- White citizens

The American Legislative Exchange Council should be brought to it's knees.

How can that happen?

37. Two Problems
Mon Jul 22, 2013, 02:56 PM
Jul 2013

I have two problems with the cartoons. First, in at least one of the pictures George Zimmerman is pictured as an overweight guy. I realize that during the trial, Zimmerman was overweight. However, when he shot Trayvon Martin he was at least a fairly fit individual. I do not think cartoons of Zimmerman should show him as an overweight guy. It could give the impression that he was an overweight and unfit guy when he shot Trayvon Martin. Second, at the end of one of the cartoons it says, "if they don't run from you". Trayvon Martin did run from George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman followed him in a vehicle and then ran after him.

Yes, from what I've read, he did run. But even if he hadn't, Zimmerman LEFT HIS CAR WITH HIS GUN READY AT HAND and he was looking to start an "altercation" and resolve it with the death of what he considered a "fucking punk."

Zimmerman was SET on "meting out justice." (What he determined to be justice, in his racist wannabe-cop mind.)

47. Zimmerman Verdict Declares Open Season on Black Boys
Mon Jul 22, 2013, 11:31 PM
Jul 2013

by Gary Younge

Let it be noted that on this day, Saturday 13 July 2013, it was still deemed legal in the US to chase and then shoot dead an unarmed young black man on his way home from the store because you didn't like the look of him. ...

Since it was Zimmerman who stalked Martin, the question remains: what ground is a young black man entitled to and on what grounds may he defend himself? What version of events is there for that night in which Martin gets away with his life? Or is it open season on black boys after dark?

Zimmerman's not guilty verdict will be contested for years to come. But he passed judgement on Trayvon that night summarily.

"Fucking punks," Zimmerman told the police dispatcher that night. "These assholes. They always get away."

So true it's painful. And so predictable it hurts.

the little girl's beautiful eyes beaming with hope in contrast with the placard child's eyes conveying sadness and fear ... what a moving image and powerful message

I can only hope that little girl grows up -- and I mean that in the literal sense of growing up, as in reaching adulthood, and secondly, in the sense of living her life -- in a "Zimmerman-free" society.
