http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/feb/19/test-tube-burger-meat-eating?newsfeed=trueProject funded by anonymous individual aims to cut number of cattle farmed for food and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Good deal from all perspectives. Better for environment, animals, vegetarians who made the chose based on animal crulity/enviro issues.
I'm looking forward to trying some.

(36,988 posts)Why not a NY cut steak? I think this is not far in the future.

(36,926 posts)I haven't eaten meat for 20 years and wouldn't be able to eat the lab grown kind either. Meat is disgusting to me. But I am very happy for all the lives that will be saved with this invention!

(4,056 posts)I became a veggie at 22 in 1977 and never missed a minute of eating meat. So I would be one who wouldn't partake in lab-created steak and such. However, if it gets some of the methane-producing cattle and really, really polluting swine out of our environment, I'll support it.
One thing though: obviously I've been around a long time, and most everything I've seen where humans try to improve on nature is an Epic Fail. Evolution takes millions of years; for humankind to think they can recreate it under artificial, accelorated conditions is always cause for wariness!
(on edit: just read the Guardian article, and apparently the source of the Frankensteak is adult cattle stem cells. Dairy products notwithstanding, most vegetarians won't eat something that has its origins in living animals. Think I'll stick to my plant-based diet, which has kept me healthy and satisfied for most of my life.)

(36,926 posts)It's a little hard eating out, but we've managed to cope. Most restaurants are happy to offer vegetarian alternatives or change the ingredients around to accommodate us.
I do hope this works though. Would be awesome if factory farms could be totally eliminated simply through market forces. Oh, wait, that's already happening. Power to the animals!

(45,558 posts)I try not to eat meat more than twice a week.
That's good for me since I grew up with a butcher as an Uncle and we had steak twice a week, pork chops, cubed steaks, roasts, Hams.
We ate fish on Fridays, raised a Catholic...
Beef doesn't taste the same to me anymore. It has a wierd taste now that I can't put my finger on whch is why I make meat loaf or meat balls.
Chicken still tastes okay.

(102,378 posts)reared beef? I'd imagine that would explain part of the taste change.

(45,558 posts)But the forced slaughter of cattle in 18 months, caused by the corn feeding and the antibiotics and, I might add, hormones, don't allow for the marbeling that I remember so well.
There is a big dfference between 18 months and 24 months for maturity.
I would rather pay a little extra to get quality beef and eat less than buy crap and eat it more.
But even going to the "good" steak houses, I have found, doesn't gaurentee that rich marbled taste...

If it became successful, would we even have cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, bison anymore? Just in zoos?

(53,410 posts)Leather comes form cattle and other animals are used for different types of skin or pelts.
hlthe2b
(102,378 posts)what will happen to livestock in the future? Do you think we would raise them only for their skins?
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Perhaps something synthetic could be invented instead of using leather. Or maybe they would grow hides just like they grow human skin now to be used to make leather goods.

(102,378 posts)BUt, I would still hate to see cattle, sheep, and other livestock disappear...
lunatica
(53,410 posts)I don't think they'll disappear. It'll probably be a very long time before meat processing plants can produce enough meat to feed the world. Though I hope it catches on and turns out to be cheap and easy.

(3,751 posts)Chicken Nuggets Are Made From This Pink Goop
This is mechanically separated chicken. Chickens are turned into this goop so we can create delicious chicken nuggets and juicy chicken patties. It's obscenely gross and borderline alien but it's not going to stop me from eating nuggets. They're too good.
The process works a little something like this:
There's more: because it's crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.
Yeah, that's just disgusting. But I can't shake my roots. I'm a chicken nugget fan (and all around fast food guy) for life.

(35,015 posts)I'll stick with my natural non-meat foods thank you very much. It is a good idea though, to reduce the number of cattle raised and killed for the sole purpose of human enjoyment.
