The (somewhat) breathless wait for Britain's royal baby

http://www.latimes.com/news/world/worldnow/la-fg-wn-kate-william-baby-20130720,0,6784777.story

As of this writing, there are few duller spots on the Internet than the live cam that Britain's Telegraph newspaper is aiming at the Lindo wing of St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where the duchess of Cambridge is expected to deliver the heir to the British throne ... sometime. Presumably, maybe, sometime soon.

The scene: A red-brick hospital building, with an entrance through Georgian-style doors. Every once in a while, a passer-by passes by. The random motor vehicle blurs by. Otherwise ... nothing.

"How much longer will the world have to wait?" the Telegraph asked, perhaps a bit peevishly, noting that the former Kate Middleton's due date was actually Friday.

That's the nature of waiting for births, royal or otherwise, and it appears to be driving some of the British media a bit crazy. The Sun tabloid, perhaps best known for its topless Page 3 pinups, found lookalikes for the duke and duchess, William and Kate, and sent the faux royals to the hospital, where they reportedly fooled the assembled media briefly into thinking the real couple were arriving for delivery.

Will one take the Tube? Paddy Power gives commuters a shock with royal baby look-a-likes (01 July 2013)

<snip>

"Commuters on the Circle line this morning could be forgiven for thinking they were still dreaming when four giant babies boarded the Tube.

With just 13 days until the royal baby’s official due date, bookmaker Paddy Power sent four oversized toddlers in nappies and crowns to Buckingham Palace to publicise the royal bets it’s offering.

The bookie is accepting bets on everything from the new royal’s hair colour, gender, name, university, career – and even the name of their first girlfriend or boyfriend.

Last month alone, Paddy Power saw more than 2,000 bets on the possible hair colour of the future heir, with the current odds on ginger 7/1, brunette 6/4, black 2/1 and blonde 7/2."

My girl crush of the week comes quite straightforwardly in the splendid form of 88-year-old Margaret Rhodes. The Queen's first cousin was recently asked by an American news station whether she was excited about the imminent arrival of a new heir to the throne.

"Not terribly," she replied. Warming to her theme, she pointed out with admirable precision that, "Well, you know, everybody has babies. And it's lovely, but I don't get wildly excited about it."

Having lived through nine decades of so many royal births, deaths, marriages, divorces and toe-suckings, it is quite clearly going to take more than the miracle of new life to stir Mrs Rhodes's interest.

When it was pointed out to her that the baby would one day be king or queen and that the birth would be a fairly historic event, Mrs Rhodes replied: "Yes, all right. I'm prepared to be excited."
