LEAWOOD, Kan. - From an innocent shopping trip to a false drug test, new court documents reveal what triggered a traumatic and fruitless raid of a Leawood family's home.
When we first met Bob and Addie Harte in March, they had no idea why deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff's office had banged on their door in April 2012 looking for marijuana. Their only guess was the hydroponic garden in their basement. The father-son project was for growing tomatoes and squash -- not marijuana.
The Hartes sued to get the police records, and 41 Action News filed a request for the information weeks ago. Those records reveal it all started when a member of the Missouri Highway Patrol spotted Bob Harte at The Green Circle in August 2011.
The owner of the hydroponics store in the River Market isn't happy his customers are being watched.
"Why should they be?" asked Bennie Palmentere. "This isn't a communist country."

(6,932 posts)It's crazy. A profession that should be held to a higher standard than any other, and after all the continual malfeasance, no one ever loses their job, let alone goes to jail.

(65,616 posts)But we do NOT have the right to privacy anymore. Cops have all the rules and the guns on their side. They will even strip the sheet rock off the walls in a futile attempt to find drugs. And if they don't find them, the more minutes that tick by the angrier they get in demanding you hand over the drugs! Hard to do with no drugs in the house.
This happend to some friends, the cops got the wrong house yet still managed to end up arresting everyone in the house. On no charges, but that the cops got the wrong house. It is the jackboots that love the 'war on drugs'. They make America SUCK.

Trust only those in power. They will always protect you and do what is best for you.
Your fellow citizen - well, we have everything on them. We post stories all over the press of the people who do bad things while sliding right past the drones/cops/etc.

(65,616 posts)Sure, the cops got the military grade weapons - but we have over 200 million firearms. I trust a person that I know, before I trust a person that I just met. Cops included.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)that all own a plethora of handguns and such.
Once those people are off duty a good majority of them own guns at home (When I did armed security I owned the gun and brought it home with me).
My son is in the reserves now, has a gun at home. Does he count as a gun owner?? My dad served in the army (where, according to some, he could be trusted with a gun) left there a long time ago, still owns one. Should he not be allowed to now but he could then?
Funny how trust works according to some.

(65,616 posts)My suspicions are instantly raised when I see someone with a gun more than anything else. I HATE seeing people walk around with their gun strapped on like it was the fucking Wild West.

(17,064 posts)They set up a surveillence camera across the street from a hydroponics supply store, to record license plates. They then searched the homes without warrent by posing as utility crews, or lied to get a warrent claiming they could "smell weed" from the street. Big scandal. Many cases thrown out.
