Sad news, but the dog had a good, long life.
BAYFIELD, Wis. An aging dog whose restful repose in Lake Superior while in the arms of his owner captured widespread attention has died.
Schoep and owner John Unger, of Bayfield, became Internet celebrities last summer after a photographer captured the two relaxing in the soothing water. Schoep, who was arthritic, blind and hard of hearing, rested his head peacefully on Unger's shoulder.
Within four days of posting the photo on Facebook, it had 1.8 million views.
Unger said on the Facebook page he shares with Schoep that the 20-year-old dog died on Wednesday. News of the dog's death generated nearly 19,000 comments as of Friday morning.

(7,499 posts)What a dear, loving pair Schoep and is owner were. I feel for John Unger; the loss of his dog, especially after twenty years together, is going to be difficult to deal with. I lost one of my twelve and a half year old bichons in December, and I miss him each and every day.
Godspeed to Schoep, and hugs and comfort to John.

(21,478 posts)Each day John would post about Schoep, and it was a great comfort to read of their leisurely Minnesota days as I toil in crowded DC.

I hope John will keep it up, and transition the page to one that advocates on behalf of dog adoptions everywhere. He and Schoep did a great service; now is the time to take it to the next level.
RIP, Schoep. Good doggie.
