Statement by the President
Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Helen Thomas. Helen was a true pioneer, opening doors and breaking down barriers for generations of women in journalism. She covered every White House since President Kennedys, and during that time she never failed to keep presidents myself included on their toes. What made Helen the Dean of the White House Press Corps was not just the length of her tenure, but her fierce belief that our democracy works best when we ask tough questions and hold our leaders to account. Our thoughts are with Helens family, her friends, and the colleagues who respected her so deeply.

Too bad 99% of today's Washington journalists don't share that belief.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/07/19/appeals-court-rules-intelligence-reporter-james-risen-must-testify-if-indicted-whistleblower-was-his-source/WASHINGTON (Reuters) A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that the First Amendment right to free speech does not prevent a New York Times journalist from giving testimony in a high-profile government leak case.
The ruling by the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is a win for the Obama administration, but it could hurt efforts by Attorney General Eric Holder to improve relations with the media. The Justice Department last week pledged to tighten its criteria for targeting journalists in leak cases

Edit: To those who regard this as hate fest material, I regard as exactly what Helen Thomas would be pointing out to us. I was remiss in publically stating a RIP to Helen Thomas whom I greatly admired. She asked the 'uncomfortable' questions boldly and seemingly without fear of reprisal.

(297,275 posts)10. I see the haters can't handle a statement of Helen
Thomas' passing by PBO without dropping their ignorant turds.
They've rendered themselves impotent with their attempts at distraction from his message.
I'm glad Pres Obama isn't a hater.. it's all one ugly sided. Way to ugly up a tribute to Helen Thomas, geniuses.

Our Presidents heartfelt statement on Helen Thomas' passing.
I love this picture~
Sorry about the hate fest, that joined in with their sympathy to Helen and her family.
No topic about the President seems to be sacrosanct without a bash or two.
