We are deeply honored and moved that President Obama took the time to speak publicly and at length about our son, Trayvon. The Presidents comments give us great strength at this time. We are thankful for President Obamas and Michelles prayers, and we ask for your prayers as well as we continue to move forward.
We know that the death of our son Trayvon, the trial and the not guilty verdict have been deeply painful and difficult for many people. We know our family has become a conduit for people to talk about race in America and to try and talk about the difficult issues that we need to bring into the light in order to become a better people.
What touches people is that our son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin, could have been their son. President Obama sees himself in Trayvon and identifies with him. This is a beautiful tribute to our boy.
Trayvons life was cut short, but we hope that his legacy will make our communities a better place for generations to come. We applaud the Presidents call to action to bring communities together to encourage an open and difficult dialogue. Our family is committed to this dialogue through the work of the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
We seek a future when a child can walk down the street and not worry that others see him as dangerous because of the color of his skin or the clothes on his back. We seek a future where our children can grow up and become the people God intended them to be.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation was established to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims, and to provide support and advocacy for those families, in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin. The scope of the Foundations mission is to advocate that crime victims and their families not be ignored in the discussions about violent crime, to increase public awareness of all forms of racial, ethnic and gender profiling, educate youth on conflict resolution techniques, and to reduce the incidences where confrontations between strangers turn deadly.

(2,730 posts)remarks on CNN. I also read an article about who Trayvon Martin really was on CNN by Kim Seagal. I think people need to read that. The kid is totally different than what the defense portrayed about him in the media. I didn't know Trayvon volunteered for programs to help young people at social events either. That article also claimed Trayvon Martin always wore a hoodie and had on microphones when he walked, listening to music. He was apparently on his phone a lot with Jeantel that day. Even when he went out to the store he listened to music. The prosecution never presented that. The article also gave explanations in more details about those suspensions. The last one was for ten days because they found marijuana residue in his pipe, backpack or something. His teachers, coaches and teammates gave very positive views about Trayvon. No fighting or any violence as they knew. They claimed he was always positive and friendly. And as far as Mr O'Mara is concerned, he demonized this kid in the media, so he could get his client off. Just as much as he lied about the jury.

(81,523 posts)this ungodly nightmare. I'm heartsick - as a mom. That's the FIRST place I go, personally. As a mom. IMMEDIATELY I think of my kid - who's now 21. And of his sister who will be 24 this year. You worry ANYWAY just because you're a parent. Moms and Dads worry just because. I cannot fathom what kinds of emotions Sybrina Fulton is feeling by now. It's beyond imagining. And she has been elegant, composed, and poised beyond belief. And Tracy Martin - there by her side at what seems like every waking moment. A display of family values, albeit a poignant one, is how that looks, to me. Likely those who sneer would claim to have the monopoly on family values, mind you.
I think some of the most noble, graceful, indeed damn near regal behavior I've seen in among public newsmakers lately has been displayed by the likes of those who've been on the receiving end of beastly treatment: Barack and Michelle Obama, and Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin. Makes you want to stand up a little straighter, even during a time when it's possible to conceive of being ashamed of being an American.
