I don't think I have ever seen a weather map where every city in the entire country was red like this--and this is an improvement from earlier in the week when there was no orange at all.
I know it's July but this is not normal--or maybe it is...the new normal. Either way it's bad.

(30,947 posts)It may get hot and humid, but at least there are sea breezes to help cool it off. I now live in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. In the hot days of summer, there are no breezes, just still hot air. People complain about the humidity here in the summer, but I don't find it that bad as compared with South Florida humidity.

(53,339 posts)It's more normal at the moment (currently 104 here in the Antelope Valley), but we had some early heat waves and more are expected.
I grew up in the SFV, and I remember the hot days as the ones where my buddies and I would be sitting in my backyard, leaning against the block wall, repeating the same old hot-day conversation: "What do you wanna do?" "I dunno, what do you wanna do?" "I dunno, what do you wanna do?" ...

(53,339 posts)We sat on the shady side of the wall, but the heat was enervating. And with no A/C, it was just as bad indoors. If we were lucky, one of the neighborhood parents would throw us in the car and take us to Crystal Plunge, a small public swimming pool in Panorama City. I have to say, though, that the hi dez is even worse!

(24,853 posts)I'll be glad when that damn fire in Idylwild is out... it was SMOKEY up here today.

(53,339 posts)Our 105 today was fairly seasonable for the L.A. County hi dez.
I know that fire is not far from you, and a 35 square mile burn area with 6,000 evacuated is pretty big. I hope they're getting a handle on it.
The Powerhouse fire gave us all the smoke I want to eat for this year...but the fire season started very early, and we know there's more to come for the Southwest.
Stay safe up there!

(3,731 posts)quite normal for this time of year, in fact, we're a couple of degrees below normal.

(19,339 posts)That map is difficult to read and looks alarming because of the range at the bottom. If the map listed only colors for 60-110, and used a dozen gradations of color instead of 50, it would look very different -- dare I say, normal.

(13,124 posts)this week which was all red, no gradations.
The weatherman said the entire country was/is under a dome of stagnant, hot air.
That did not/does not seem normal.
But you're right--it is summer.

(12,977 posts)Usually a series of highs and lows follows one another. But I saw something on Weather Underground a few days ago saying there were just two huge highs with a tiny trough of low pressure between them -- and that the two highs were already starting to merge at the northern end.
I'll see if I can find it again.

(2,100 posts)Like you I REALLY hate hot weather so I'm cool with it (though I haven't had a good crop of tomatoes in a while). Used to be we'd have maybe three or four weeks total of blistering hot heat throughout the summer. But for the past few years we've had maybe one week of really hot weather the whole summer long, if that. We had, what, 3 days of heat about a month ago?

June 2013 was the globe's 5th warmest June since records began in 1880, according to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). NASA rated it the 2nd warmest June on record. The year-to-date period of January - June has been the 7th warmest such period on record. June 2013 global land temperatures were the 3rd warmest on record, and global ocean temperatures were the 10th warmest on record. June 2013 was the 340th consecutive month with global temperatures warmer than the 20th century average. Global satellite-measured temperatures in June 2013 for the lowest 8 km of the atmosphere were 5th or 4th warmest in the 35-year record, according to Remote Sensing Systems and the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH), respectively. Wunderground's weather historian, Christopher C. Burt, has a comprehensive post on the notable weather events of June 2013 in his June 2013 Global Weather Extremes Summary.

(111,319 posts)for over a week now, northerly winds bringing us moisture and cooler air. The monsoonal flow has been cut off completely by this weather pattern but the rain 8 days out of 10 has been welcome in the parched high desert.
The pattern is supposed to start breaking down tomorrow and we'll be back to baking in a dry oven. For today, the clouds have started rolling in and the sun has gone away for the balance of the evening.

(39,909 posts)Don't want to sound like I'm gloating, but this has been a BIZARRE Spring/Summer here.
First EVER snowfall in May.
We set RECORD LOW temps last week.
We have been able to sleep without A/C almost every night this July.
Daytime temps are hot in the afternoon this week, approaching 100,
but NOT the 110+ we have seen almost every July day for the last 3 years.
We have NEVER been able to sleep without A/C in July for the 8 years we have been here,
AND
it is now RAINING, ending a 1 month dry spell.
BUT the bizarre thing is that the rain/Thunderstorms have been moving from EAST to WEST.
That almost NEVER happens in this part of the country.
Anybody who has ever watched Storm Chasers KNOWS that the Summer pattern for storms
is West to East.
We had to research this afternoon to see if it is possible to have a Tornado move from East to West,
and it IS possible, but very rare.
Its crazy,
but we'll take the cool nights,
especially after the last 3 years of DROUGHT/ HEAT HELL.
Our Veggies and Melons are REALLY loving it.
Forecast LOW tonight 68F.

(27,247 posts)Although March and April have traditionally been worst months for tornadoes in Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas has recently been having tornadoes in December/January, including the New Year's Eve tornado that damaged a good part of Cincinnati (Washington County). And a few years ago, there was a big snow in NWArk on Halloween. These kinds of weather events never happened while I was growing up there.

(84,711 posts)If you are over 50...you might know how true that has been. And that "strange" disturbance "Off the NC Coast" for the last two years...(no one says more than that)...but, I'm a Weather Underground Fan...and Dr. Jeff Masters has pointed out that the Jet Stream has Changed and that's why we are getting the East to West.
Glad to see someone else post about that who has observed and knows how odd an occurrence that is.

(13,124 posts)It's always been west to east--you could count on that.
You don't know what to expect with this change which is even scarier.

(6,785 posts)And going on our 4th week of rain every single day, so 78% humidity, expected to top 85% tonight.
I'm giving serious consideration to breaking my "No air conditioner" rule and justifying it by claiming it's necessary for my computer.

(269,144 posts)The NWS of San Juan just informed more rainfall than the 8.43 inches originally reported and the new rainfall total is a historic record rainfall of 9.11 inches that fell before 5 PM EDT. This ranks as the second biggest total for one day in San Juan, more than when Hurricane Hugo moved thru.
From the Jeff Masters Comments page at Weather Underground - and it's still raining in Puerto Rico

(53,339 posts)I hadn't seen anything about that yet. I hope that doesn't mean flooding putting people at risk.

(21,174 posts)So chilly I'm wearing a sweatshirt to keep warm instead of turning on the heater.
That said we've had unseasonable warm weather last week that was out of the ordinary.
Anyone who says the planet's not warming is ignorant or propagandized. Increased flooding, heat waves, unseasonable weather and excessive heat and wild fires shame on you for your denial.

(35,337 posts)End of June and the first few days were scorchers. Then it backed off.
The west Oregon temps seem within normal. The coast might be a bit warmer, but that can vary a bit. After all, it's mid July.
You're complainting that the temperatures aren't in the 60s. I suspect that in some places they might be, but they don't show up. High up in the Rockies, for instance.
A record average might be that there are a really high temperatures or just that lots of places are at the high end of normal all at the same time.
