<...>
Speaking outside his office in a courtyard off a prestigious central Moscow street, Kucherena said he helped Snowden put together the asylum application after the stranded fugitive requested his assistance.
A supporter of President Vladimir Putin who supported Putin's election campaign last year, Kucherena also has a legal practice in Moscow that takes on high-profile cases.
He also sits on the "public council" of the Federal Security Service (FSB), which was created by Putin in 2006.

The FSB is the main successor agency to the KGB.
Yes....that KGB.
The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) <...> is the principal security agency of the Russian Federation and the main successor agency to the USSR's Committee of State Security (KGB). Its main responsibilities are within the country and include counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance as well as investigating some other types of grave crimes. It is headquartered in Lubyanka Square, Moscow's centre, in the main building of the former KGB. The Director of the FSB since 2008, is army general Aleksandr Bortnikov.

It's a good thing Snowden is utterly opposed to surveillance and spying, otherwise he might have hired a lawyer who sits on the public council of Russia's main spy agency.
Oh wait...
You just can't make this shit up.

(18,115 posts)Doesn't it make since for public counsel from an ICE-like agency to assist in an asylum claim?
I would have to look more into Russia's legal system with regard to asylum/refugee claims before I though this was anything to freak out about.
Also, what role does Kucherena, as public counsel, play with respect to the "spy" aspects of the FSB? Public counsel could be appointed counsel to assist claims or like our US Attorneys. Do you know, or are you just frothing at an acronym?

(55,981 posts)I think those that are trying to change the focus away from possible Constitutional violations are not very American. "Hey look over there at Snowden". Those that refuse to discuss FICA, the Patriot Act or indefinite detention but are willing to assassinate the character of those that dare to attempt to open discussion regarding our Republican (Clapper, Mueller, and Comey) spy agencies.
It's Democrats that are speaking out to have the spy agencies investigated and the Republicans that are objecting. Which side are you on?

(30,439 posts)The source in my OP is Maria Antonova of agence france presse. She is the one that mentioned the lawyer sitting on the public council of the FSB. The second article is straight out of wikipedia.
Where in the world did you get Daniel Greenfield from?

(4,802 posts)Couldn't find any reference to this claim of Snowden's lawyer. Daniel Greenfield was the first author to be mentioned after five pages of Google Search. Where ever you picked up this story, its not hot with the mainstream press.

(30,439 posts)The author, Maria Antonova, works for the AFP.
I never once even mentioned Daniel Greenfield or even linked to his work and then you claimed I used him as a source.

(55,981 posts)Booz-Allen/NSA connection? There are lots of threads discussing just what Booz-Allen was doing spying on Americans. Why arent you interested in those stories, yet obsessed with character assassinating Snowden over and over and over. Do you think that lynching Snowden will put the horses back in the barn?
Here are some interesting threads that you seemed to have missed or ignoring:
