Snowden's lawyer in Moscow sits on the public council of the FSB (Russia's main spy agency)

Anatoly Kucherena, a Russian lawyer who helped Snowden file an application for asylum in Russia earlier Tuesday, told AFP the fugitive former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor was happy with his treatment at the airport.

<...>

Speaking outside his office in a courtyard off a prestigious central Moscow street, Kucherena said he helped Snowden put together the asylum application after the stranded fugitive requested his assistance.

A supporter of President Vladimir Putin who supported Putin's election campaign last year, Kucherena also has a legal practice in Moscow that takes on high-profile cases.

He also sits on the "public council" of the Federal Security Service (FSB), which was created by Putin in 2006.

The FSB is the main successor agency to the KGB.

Yes....that KGB.

The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) <...> is the principal security agency of the Russian Federation and the main successor agency to the USSR's Committee of State Security (KGB). Its main responsibilities are within the country and include counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance as well as investigating some other types of grave crimes. It is headquartered in Lubyanka Square, Moscow's centre, in the main building of the former KGB. The Director of the FSB since 2008, is army general Aleksandr Bortnikov.

It's a good thing Snowden is utterly opposed to surveillance and spying, otherwise he might have hired a lawyer who sits on the public council of Russia's main spy agency.

Oh wait...

You just can't make this shit up.

"He does not rule out the possibility of asking for Russian citizenship," said prominent lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, who helped Snowden put together his asylum bid on Tuesday.

"He told me: 'I am not going to go anywhere'," said Kucherena, adding Snowden planned to stay in Russia for now.

<...>

He added he would be happy to show Snowden the sights of Moscow, including famous landmarks such as Red Square, Lenin's Mausoleum and the Tretyakov Gallery.

The FSB combines functions and powers similar to those exercised by the United States FBI National Security Branch, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Federal Protective Service, the National Security Agency (NSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, United States Coast Guard, and partly the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Doesn't it make since for public counsel from an ICE-like agency to assist in an asylum claim?

I would have to look more into Russia's legal system with regard to asylum/refugee claims before I though this was anything to freak out about.

Also, what role does Kucherena, as public counsel, play with respect to the "spy" aspects of the FSB? Public counsel could be appointed counsel to assist claims or like our US Attorneys. Do you know, or are you just frothing at an acronym?

I think those that are trying to change the focus away from possible Constitutional violations are not very American. "Hey look over there at Snowden". Those that refuse to discuss FICA, the Patriot Act or indefinite detention but are willing to assassinate the character of those that dare to attempt to open discussion regarding our Republican (Clapper, Mueller, and Comey) spy agencies.

It's Democrats that are speaking out to have the spy agencies investigated and the Republicans that are objecting. Which side are you on?

Booz-Allen/NSA connection? There are lots of threads discussing just what Booz-Allen was doing spying on Americans. Why arent you interested in those stories, yet obsessed with character assassinating Snowden over and over and over. Do you think that lynching Snowden will put the horses back in the barn?

Here are some interesting threads that you seemed to have missed or ignoring:
