School expels rape victim for curfew break
A Catholic secondary school in France has caused outrage by expelling a teenage girl who was allegedly raped during a school trip to Berlin. The school said the girl had broken a strict curfew and had been drinking on the night.
The 15-year-old girl was on a class trip to Berlin on May 28th when she left her hostel room after 10pm with a friend in order to meet up with a group of young Polish men who were staying on the same floor of their youth hostel, according to reports in the French media.
The girls then returned to the room with the men to drink vodka. It is then alleged that at least one of the girls was orally raped, the victim's lawyer told The Local.
The teenagers reported the traumatic attack to their teachers two days later, at which point the school filed a complaint with local police, who are still investigating the claims.
However, on returning to Notre-Dame de la Providence, a private Catholic school in Thionville, in the Moselle department of north-eastern France, the girls were shocked to be hauled in front of a disciplinary meeting, before being excluded.

(13,485 posts)Is there a comparison between the two issues? Rape is being investigated. Girls broke curfew rule. Two different things.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)The school had a responsibility, since it was a class trip, to monitor them and make sure things like this did not happen.
They failed.

(38,958 posts)I do believe the school had the ultimate responsibility of protecting it's charges on the trip. That said, the girl did violate the curfew, which was in place for a reason. I don't think she should be expelled by any stretch of the imagination, but the school needs to review it's policies and enforcement of the curfew rule for such trips. She should not have been able to get away from supervision which ultimately allowed the situation to occur.
