Joyner proclaimed, Hi Rachel, this is Tom Joyner, I love you, I really do love you, Jeantel, shyly giggles before responding, I know.
But, Jeantel didnt know how much she was loved because, Joyner was soon to dramatically change her life in a matter of minutes, saying, If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if its not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that.
Joyner did not only offer his assistance in college, he wants to help her get there, adding, I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU youd like.
Jeantel, who we later learned was in shock from the offer, simply responded thank you.
Later in the interview, Jeantel hinted that she might pursue a career in law enforcement but she reminded Joyner and the crew she doesnt like bodies or funerals.

(10,044 posts)But are those initials correct? I'd have guessed HBCC, for Historicallly Black Communlty College? What does the "U" stand for in HBCU college?
A full scholarship would be 4 years, not 2 like a community college, so I am way off base here....sorry. Just ignore me.

(31,869 posts)You've heard of the Tuskeegee Airmen - right? My father earned his Bachelor's at Tuskeegee. My Grandfather was a grad of Morehouse, Grandmamma Spelman. Four year colleges. Of the 33 in my generation 28 went to a mix of Howard U, Morehouse, and Spelman.
South Carolia State at Orangeburg is also HBC. I think the extra C might be a typo. .
I'm not aware of any two year HBC's.
My feeling - if she can get into the school that this man is most likely an alumni of or affiliated with - good for her! Her life may have changed forever because of this case - and no better place to polish that sparkly diamond than at a place like Howard. She's a diamond - immerse her in an environment of the elite - she's going to sparkle!

It's nice that out of this tragedy, anyone would profit.
Your family is a remarkable one.

(54,770 posts)you have to see it. She was delightful I thought. Would have been nice to have a friend like her when I was teenager.
I heard people criticizing the way she talked. Morgan asked her if it was a dental problem. She said something like, "No, it is a jaw bone problem. There is surgery, but you basically can't talk for a year, and I'm not quite ready for that."
I wish her well, unlike most of the characters in that trial.

(31,869 posts)That's not funny.
Nobody prevented you from attending a HISTORICALLY black college.
Hell - I went to a HISTORICALLY WHITE MALE ONLY university - Niagara . . . and I dealth with being a black minority woman there. It wasn't a big deal - and I had a really positive experience. I can't think of one racial incident there during my college days -and the Priests who ran the place had zero tolerance for stupidity.

(1,451 posts)Tom Joyner has been doing this almost 20 years now. For him to offer this scholarship is just how Mr. Joyner is!!!!!! He has been raising money for scholarships to HBCU as long as they have been calling him the FLY JOCK. Some of us need to get out more or listen to different kinds of radio programs to broaden their horizons
