A fan..oscillating or even box fan.
Obviously this for when you are sitting still outdoors, like on a deck.
But it works.
Would work in a closed room if mosquitoes were present, I should think.
Mosquitoes are relatively weak fliers, it says on its Web site, so placing a large fan on your deck can provide a low-tech solution. The group says mosquitoes fly slowly from roughly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, depending on the species.
Scientists have identified another factor. The breeze from a fan disperses the human emanations that allow female mosquitoes to zero in on us. (The guys are innocent! Honest! Females need the stolen blood for egg making.)

A very effective, cheap remedy for mosquito bites:
dab some mentholatum on the bite. (like Vaporub, generic stuff works fine)
Reapply as needed ( when it starts to itch again). Usually 2-3 applications are all that is needed in one day,
it stops the development of the itch spot, stops itch. Also excellent for fire ant bites, and I would think bee stings, too.

(8,646 posts)Although I kinda knew it, I never thought to buy a fan for my deck. I mean, I like to go for walks on windy days because - no mosquitos! So, duh to me. LOL. I'll have to try it.

(12,164 posts)I've also seen people in south Georgia (gnat country) constantly blow out the sides of their mouths during outdoor conversations, to get the bugs to keep their distance from the neck up.

(18,638 posts)I read some people tried it out and they didn't catch anything.
I read that mosquitos don't just home in on plain CO2.
It needs to have some chemical odors that humans create to draw them in.

(13,409 posts)Large back yards might need two or three of them. They can be a bit gross to deal with after they've been out for a while, but they do the trick.

(60,010 posts)I always wondered why there were ceiling fans on open porches, knowing darn well they could not really cool anything off...
NOW I understand why!
Thanks...

(2,805 posts)Said that carrying a dryer sheet in your pants pocket will help keep mosquitoes away. I didn't hear the explanation of why it works but am going to try it next time I have to be out after dark for a couple of hours. Mosquitoes seem to love me more than any of my companions--I guess it is because I am so sweet! (At least that is what my Mom used to say to placate me when I was little.)

(60,010 posts)what would happen if you rubbed a moist sheet over arms and legs????
I gotta try that in areas where a fan won't do.
DEET makes me terribly sick.
Skin so soft has worked in the past.

(11,441 posts)I transplanted a couple of shrubs over the weekend and sprayed myself -- head to toe, including clothing -- in DEET. Those f*ckers were still buzzing around me, but only one got a bite in. I've never tried Skin-so-Soft or dryer sheets, but I'm desperate!

(18,638 posts)It's a small battery powered fan that blows through a pad of material that kills mosquitos.
It has no smell and is very quiet.
The pad lasts for about 120 days and replacements pads are available.
Best mosquito protection I've ever had.
You can get them online from web sites that import Japanese goods and ebay.
Do a Google search for "Dokodemo Vape".
Dokodemo means "anywhere". Vape is probably short for vaporizer and is the company name.
Vape has several versions of mosquito control products.
A cheaper version has a small plug-in heating element that warms up a replaceable mat of mosquito repellent. It works but has a noticeable smell that pervades the room so I prefer the Dokodemo battery version which has no smell at all.
Vape also has an English website
