All of the Pre- Pre-med students at my kid's high school own and wear hoodies. I guess they are in it just for the prescription pads.

Chino pants, tee shirt and hooded sweatshirt...yep equals thug? No...equals normal suburban wear. Sounds so L L bean to me. or Sears and Lands End. How much more normal can one dress?
