Putin: Snowden a dubious present from U.S.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57593796/putin-snowden-a-dubious-present-from-u.s/

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday characterized National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden's long stay at a Moscow airport as an unwelcome present foisted on Russia by the United States.

In comments reported by Russian news agencies during a meeting with students, Putin noted that Snowden flew to Moscow on June 23 "without invitation," intending only to transit to another country.

But Putin says the United States intimidated other countries against accepting Snowden, effectively blocking him from flying further.

"Such a present to us. Merry Christmas," he was quoted as telling the students on the Gulf of Finland island of Gogland.

No country wants him, no passport. I think Russia is working on a way to get him out, but it isn't easy the way the US has reacted.

6. I'm sure Putin could have him arrested, toss him on an American plane and be done with him

Illegal as hell, it sure would be. I think Putin is not doing that because of domestic pressures and *maybe* he thinks Snowden might be of value in the future to him.

The Russian people are actually not too upset that Snowden is there because they think he's sticking up against the American government. If Putin arrests Snowden and hands him back, the Russian people might view that as a sign of weakness which is not good for Putin who was elected on a strong nationalist campaign.

We didn't make a present of Snowden - he came to you all on his own (and maybe with your help and that of the Chinese, AGAINST our wishes) AND YOU ACCEPTED HIM.

Remember?

He wants him out but made the previous mistake of talking asylum.

Now Snowden needs asylum since no one else is willing to front the money for a private jet.

Putin is saying - ya gotta go son, but how is the question
