3 killed, when pickup carrying more than 14 children flipped on Ala. highway.

Not until I read the story did I find:
Alabama in one of 19 states in the nation that has no restrictions on passengers riding in cargo areas of pickups.
19!!!!!!

Plus the pickup was speeding at more than 65 mph ( 50 is highway limit)
apparently blew a tire, flipped 4 times, then caught fire.

Is your state one of the 19????

I see that 8 Southern states DO have laws against it
and I notice Washington state does not.

divisiveness to the discussion.

3 people lost their lives, and the red state/blue state horse shit gets introduced.

Inhuman.

... visiting my grandparents or smalltown cousins.
It was common practice.

I guess it still is in a lot of places.

In the movie MUD, the boys rode in the back of a truck quite a bit.
That was in Arkansas.

In fact, where I lived, a 12 year old could legally drive a pickup on private property.
That was back when pickups were the work horse of farms and ranches, and kids were expected to carry their weight.

This should be criminal and the driver prosecuted.

... we'd all jump in the back of the coach's pickup and go to the pizza place. It was legal then, but it hasn't been for a long time.

NOT bashing the South as a region. I live in Iowa, which is one of the few states that allows motorcycles riders to run without a helmet. When the weather gets nice every year, the local news seems to lead with a spate of rider deaths on a regular basis.

Seriously, I had not realized that helmets were not required in some states.
Results of no helmet are, sadly, inevitable.

Same with seat belts...many of us grew up drving with steering wheels the size of hubcaps, no seat belts.
But back then, there was half a ton of steel around the car.
