Every freakin' time there's a news story, somebody calls for a boycott.

LET'S BOYCOTT ALASKA!!!!

Cause you know we were ALL making travel plans to visit Alaska at this very moment!

They don't require permit to purchase open or conceal carry handguns.

I have no problem with their policy but lots on DU especially the anti-gun folk do.

embarrassing

agree completely - EVERY state has committed acts that we as DUers staunchly disagree with.

If they chose not to file charges because they had a shitty case - BOYCOTT!!!

File charges in a shitty case and lose - BOYCOTT!!!

If they had miraculously gotten a conviction, I'm sure someone would still come up with a reason for a boycott. It says a lot about the wisdom of filing charges due to public pressure.

but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a boycott reason for DC, MD or CT...at least recently.

Although, granted, it would have only been a symbolic gesture, since the Mississippi tourism industry in those days, outside of the Gulf area, Natchez and Vicksburg, was virtually non-existent.

This call for a boycott is all probably just emanating from the feeling of frustration and helplessness that everyone feels over the trial's verdict.

But addressing your point academically, a vacation boycott would be more effective in Florida because the economy depends on two main sources of income: Tourism and real estate. People who aren't coming to vacation in Florida, would probably not find a reason to move here either.

I know that many good people would be hurt if Florida were boycotted, but there is logic behind the call if it could be done selectively. You would have to understand just how business operates in Florida in order to do it effectively.

I read the minutes and listened to the tapes of a now defunct Commerce and Industry board in my city which was manned by business leaders. What I learned would have frightened anyone. As the city leaders began to yield to their buddies in the community, the purpose of the board changed from finding tax-revenue for the city (i.e. increase taxes) to suddenly being more interested in retaining existing business. In other words, the government became more business friendly. Guess who came up with that idea?

Those members of that board can now be found in the local Chamber of Commerce, which has a tight control of local government--and they exercise this preferential treatment by flaunting it on our private HOA's, using our ARB regulations as inducements for cronies, and punishment for those who they disagree with. This is what happens when government bestows favor on select members of our society.

This influence extends to law enforcement agencies. Think how easy it was for Norm Wolfinger to interject himself in the Trayvon matter with just a phone call. When it became obvious that the Federal government was going to investigate he suddenly decided not to run for reelection.

So, here's the thing about the boycott. It would work better if it were selective. Boycotting Florida seems to be a stretch, but certainly it makes sense to avoid Seminole County, especially since this verdict is bound to send the wrong signals.

My recommendation, however, goes to the other extreme. The county could use intelligent Liberals who are willing to move in and ferret out Constitutional abuses. There are many because this county insists on operating by 1950 rules. We need reporters, Constitutional law experts and web designers--for a start. Once we expose the elitist mentality that exists in this place, it will force them to change. That would be my preferred recommendation in cleaning up this county's problem.

even little Vermont has things worth boycotting, if one is into that...

still much good about Florida... Hey, Trayvon's family lives there!!! all the talk of abandoning Florida is quite discouraging and nonsense... the state and its good people need our help...

and remember Alan Grayson represents the state!!!
