I'm on vacation, and just stayed a couple of nights with someone in Amsterdam, through Airbnb.
He loves Americans, but Hates America. Is scared to come to U.S. because of all the security, the gun culture, and the NSA spying.
He says that a revolution is coming, and people are going to wake up. He also says that when it does, things are going to get ugly.
As he put it, you guys are loaded for battle. He says that when it goes bad, nobody is going to be safe, because there are so many weapons out there, no place will be safe.
He says that the perception among many Europeans, is that America is a gun crazed country, and the fact "we" truly believe that guns make us safer, proves that we are out of our minds.
Edit: I also want to add, that he's thinking of putting something in his Airbnb profile to indicate that republicans would not necessarily be a good fit to stay with him, because he is quite left of center. He's originally from Scotland, and it was somewhat refreshing meeting someone who has even more liberal views than myself.

(75,480 posts)allow guns in them. Now they do. I don't blame the Europeans for not wanting to come here. I don't even want to go into the national parks anymore and I used to work for the forest service at one time.

(26,219 posts)Was there about 10 years ago, stayed with friends. They had the same attitude about Americans and our gun culture.
(PS - heard good things about airbnb, so thanks for the reference of your experience)
I envy the dutch - their reasonable MJ laws, healthcare, work/life balance, retirement, assisted suicide for the terminally ill and NO GUNS.
In some states here in the US, you could be set free for killing a Trayvon Martin for no fucking reason (looking at you, Florida), but jailed for life for helping your 90+ year old grandmother end her 10 year battle with colon cancer.
Dating myself here, but Yakkov Smirnov said it best - "What a country"
