A disturbing thing about GZ is his age and ethnicity

He was only 28 when this incident happened, born in the '80s. Supposedly he grew up in a world where prejudice is not tolerated and has been inundated with racial awareness his whole life. From a younger generation supposedly more enlightened about issues of race/gender equality etc. I'm trying to say he's not some old white guy in his 60's that can use growing up in a different time as some kind of excuse.

He also identifies himself as hispanic/latino and had to have at least once been profiled himself in some way, or at least been aware of racial issues relating to himself.

To top all that he was a registered Democrat and voted for Obama (according to him, I know that might not be true).

But despite all this he still profiled TM as a "criminal" from the minute he saw him.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is it is incredibly depressing to think that someone his age with his background could still unfairly profile someone and has that ingrained on his brain.

I seriously doubt he voted for Obama. If he claimed that, I would rank that right up kestrel91316 Jul 2013 #2

it really depends on your upbringing and the social circle you develop. I grew up in a really diverse community, but just as many people "stuck to their own kind" as mixed it up. But some Latinos create the same fucked up pecking order among the various islands and countries and I've seen them been really very open and vocal about it. For many it does come down to how light skinned they are. I had to threaten to shit can a few people over the hazing they were giving people with skin and heritage they didn't like. They get really pissed that gringos lump em all together and do their best to differentiate- sometimes it's good stuff, but it also can get very nasty. It happens.
