I ask myself
What could have Trayvon done to stay alive
besides kiss George Zimmerman's ass?

(146,309 posts)Zimmerman could never have kept up.
That's what I'd do if someone was following me like that.
That's why people recommend running if someone has a gun. Every step you take, the less likely it is that the person will hit you if he or she shoots. Run for your life.

(7,784 posts)would have saved Trayvon's life is if he had been able to knock GZ out cold and then run home.

(29,047 posts)Zimmerman claims that Martin threw the first punch. If that is true, then Martin may be alive if he didn't punch Zimmerman.

(1,247 posts)1. Get off the phone with Rachel and call 911. Tell them you are being watched by a strange man you don't know. Describe his vehicle. (I know, I know, African American teens don't trust the police, but being taken into custody might be a little better than being at the mercy of a man you don't know and, who in Florida, could be packing heat.)
2. Keep hidden. At the end of Zimmerman's call to police dispatch, he didn't know where Trayvon was. He was afraid to give the cops his address because he thought Trayvon might still be around, but he didn't know for sure. It was dark and raining.
3. When he first ran off, Trayvon could have run all the way to Brandy's house and locked himself in. (Her house was not that far from the mailboxes; it seems to have been at the opposite corner of what was a rectangular arrangement of houses.) Once locked in, he could have stayed hidden and called his dad or Brandy at the restaurant where they were having dinner and gotten them to come home.
Of course, these are all Monday-morning quarterbacking things. In the heat of the moment, Trayvon was probably terrified. His first instinct, to run and hide, was the right one. I don't know how Trayvon and Zimmerman came upon each other again in the 2 minutes between the end of Zimmerman's call to the police and the first calls to 911 about the fight. If Zimmerman did look for him, then Trayvon's best option was to stay hidden, or, if found, run like hell. He easily outran Zimmerman the first time and could have done it again.

(29,047 posts)Exactly. Clear thinking is easier from the safety of our computers than in the heat of the moment. This is the reason I generally blame politicians more than soldiers for war crimes.

(5,455 posts)Usually a suspicious person call will cause the responding police officer(s) to proceed directly to the call, but without lights & sirens or a high rate of speed. If Martin had called 911 and said a creepy person was following him, the police response probably would have been lights & sirens and a higher rate of speed.
It also would have put Martin on the 911 tapes.
Martin also should have run, there is no way Zimmerman could have caught him.
