The overwhelming feeling in much of the black community seems to be about resignation not rioting.
The Zimmerman clan has got to be the most classless bunch of people I have ever seen in my life. It's one thing to be relieved that a verdict went your way. Quite another to basically stand up and spit in the face of the victim and their family.

(20,729 posts)not bad enough you murder someone's kid, you have to paint the murderer as the pooor widdle traumatized victim, and the kid as the "vicious attacker".
i couldn't watch anymore. absolutely no-class, disgusting, there aren't enough words to say what a creepy sleazy family that is.
BronxBoy
(2,286 posts)but for the life of me I can't recall another high profile case with racial and social implications similar to this one where the acquitted party immediately continues to take shots at the victim in the case.

(2,286 posts)I mean no matter where you stand on this verdict, I think most decent people would find this a time for quite reflection not an opportunity for national I told you so's. I've never killed anyone nor even been close to being in a situation like this but I'm sure that I wouldn't have the reactions these folks seem to be having.

(50,994 posts)in the court room. I'm not sure if that reflects upon his actual feelings or not? Though, his "God's plan" bullshit to Hannity makes me think so.

(2,286 posts)what this experience has done to him and whether he has any remorse. But judging by the comments from his family and attorneys, one can only shake one's head. Mr Zimmerman's life seems to be an ever escalating sage of ever aggressive acts to others. So either he will be chastened by this experience or it will serve to further fortify him with a sense of entitlement. I know what I think but we shall see
I can't help but contrast the post by a DUer the other day on how he took a life and the ongoing effect it has had upon his life with the almost jubilant and entitled air that these folks are showing over the death of this kid.

Well stated!

(8,421 posts)but jeez-o-pete, you'd think that the Zimmerman family would know that they should just keep their mouths shut for a good long while, But heck, they produced a murderer like George, so I guess expecting class is asking too much.

(4,340 posts)Like the black community knows more shit will pour down on all of them if they react.
BronxBoy
(2,286 posts)I can only speak for my circle of family and friends but there is no feeling of "Let's not do anything because we'll get crushed" Actually of lot of the reaction that I have seen deals with the hurt that the Martin family must be feeling and requests for prayers in this very difficult hour for them.
I didn't post too much about this case because I knew that this outcome was a definite and most likely outcome. I think many Black folks feel the same way.
Like I said resignation not rioting
sadbear
(4,340 posts)Perhaps not. But the black community during Jim Crow was also resigned, wasn't it?
BronxBoy
(2,286 posts)Fearful would probably be a better word. And it's interesting that here we are some 50 years removed from Jim Crow when 2 folks who don't know each other are talking about gross inequities in the legal system.
The more things change, the more the stay the same

(2,286 posts)been turned off by the number of folks in the Zimmerman camp that have been using the death of Trayon as a money making machine. I know it's supposedly been under the guise of raising money for the defense but jeez

(2,286 posts)I mean for all the talk of rioting and stuff, my opinion is that deep down in our collective guts, Black folks knew that this was a possible and most likely probable outcome. So I think the talk of outraged Blacks rioting in the streets was out there to say the least.
But if anything would really spur people beyond the breaking point it would be this in your face trash talking by Zimmerman and his camp. I mean STFU already and be glad you are not being fitted for an orange jumpsuit

(24,721 posts)If we DUers were angry about this case from day one, imagine how Trayvon's parents must have felt as it unfolded like a Twilight Zone episode. While they were grieving for their dead son, they were subjected to a surreal, circus-like media hell -- & then to have gone through such a sketchy court process. I admired the parents' restraint in not allowing anger to guide their way. That took a lot of inner strength.
So, my thoughts on tonight's verdict:
-- I'm thinking most about Trayvon's parents & how devastated they must feel. I wonder how many FL families are feeling unsafe & afraid living day to day under FL's laws. As a white person, I'm so ashamed of my race.
-- I wasn't impressed with the jury selection at all & I was proven correct. Why the prosecution didn't push to interview more of the jury pool is beyond me.
-- Reflecting on all the missteps from the beginning of this case to the end, it all seems hinky to me.

(2,286 posts)and as opposed to voicing rants about rioting, most of the things I've seen posted in my circles about this primarily deal with offering well wishes and prayers for the Martin family. Not sure if I could kept a sense of dignity like they have. In fact, I know I couldn't.
I don't think you need to be ashamed of your race. There were many, many White people who felt this was a miscarriage of justice and said so. Many publicly. Many of them right here. Race was front and center in this trial but in the long run, I think it will serve to bring like minded people together regardless of race to make sure the justice system treats all equitably. Tonight that seems like a far way off but I think it will happen eventually.
The are going to be postmortems done on this trial ad infinteum. But there is one truth that will remain constant; if George Zimmerman had made the choice to remain is his car that night, we probably wouldn't be posting about this right now.

(24,721 posts)Right now CBS's Big Brother reality show is going on; it's in its third week. There was a huge uproar by the viewers, sparking a Change.org petition, due to some of the houseguests (contestants) making racist remarks, which was done live on the internet feed. Big, big backlash.
