Disturbing chart shows rise in “justified killings” of blacks in U.S.

George Zimmerman has been found not guilty of murdering the unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida. Many Americans were not shocked. And there's a good reason why. Hard data shows that recent U.S. laws make it easy for blacks to be gunned down without anyone being found guilty of murder.

This is why we cannot simply obey the laws. We have to fight bad laws. If that means finding someone liberal_at_heart Jul 2013 #3

guilty of manslaughter when clearly they are but the law says otherwise, we must do the right thing. We are too conditioned to obey the law. The people during the civil rights movement didn't always follow the law. Often times they broke the law just by sitting down at a diner where blacks were prohibited or by drinking out of a fountain that was designated for whites only or by refusing to sit in the back of the bus. Be free thinkers people. Be courageous. Fight unjust laws, don't obey them. Do you think people who are sick with cancer or AIDS and who are in pain and vomitting their guts out care if the federal government tells them they cannot smoke marijuana? No, they don't

Unfortunately, as seen in many replies on DU, many have been trained that the "law" is the be all, end all of our very existence, and if we do not recognize this then we will descend into anarchy and chaos. Of course, it is the blind obedience to the "law" that does eventually leads to anarchy and chaos. You are right in that power never cedes anything. I lay much of this at the feet of the legal establishment in mesmerizing the populace in the obedience of legal procedures which benefits - the legal establishment.

Chart says it all. BTW, it would be interesting to see a map of the states that have adopted this SICK ALEC-written "Wild West" law... with dates of adoption. ALEC needs to be abolished along with all the legislation they have written in this country. States need to get off the pot and write their own GD laws. Also, has ALEC written any Federal legislation, or do they just work thru the states to go around the U.S. Congress? We need uniform laws in this country and Congress, not ALEC Corporations, needs to be writing our laws.
