according to their statement

July 13, 2013
(Orlando) The National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People released the following statement on
the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of
Trayvon Martin:

NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock:

“Today, justice failed Trayvon Martin and his family,”
said Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP. “We call
immediately for the Justice Department to conduct an
investigation into the civil rights violations committed
against Trayvon Martin. This case has re-energized the
movement to end racial profiling in the United States.”

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous:

“We are outraged and heartbroken over today’s verdict,”
said Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP.
“We stand with Trayvon’s family and we are called to act.
We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of
Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Y
our Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until
racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed.”

NAACP Florida State Conference President Adora Obi Nweze:

“We lost a young man due to senseless violence, but justice
did not prevail,” said Adora Obi Nweze, President of the Florida
NAACP State Conference. “Last year we pushed for the arrest
of George Zimmerman and a thorough investigation and trial.
Today, we are still called to act. No one should be allowed to
use this law to commit a senseless crime again.”

And from this "system" everybody still wants to praise as being the best in the world. Doesn't look like that so much, on this day-after. Zimmerman, and others like him, will take this as approval, validation, and vindication for what he did. And if he was, in effect, told by the jury and the system and the law that he did nothing wrong, indeed WHAT IS TO STOP HIM from doing the same thing again, if ever in a similar situation? And what's to stop others like him from pointing to his case and saying "SEE? NOTHING wrong here! No harm, no foul! Carry on!"

Mon Jul 15, 2013, 12:51 PM
Jul 2013

Trayvon Martin was legally walking in a neighborhood that he had a legal right to be in. He was accosted by an armed man who apparently did not even identify himself, which most likely prompted Martin to legally defend himself. What Martin got for that was murdered and his killer let off scott free, legally.

It seems to be boiling down to a case survival for the next potential victims of "Zimmerman style justice".

And I have empathy for Trayvon Martin and disgust for his murderer. I could barely go to sleep last night, just thinking how this must be another blow for his mother, thinking about how this must be like losing her boy all over again.

It seems to me that five white women from the Sanford area (where there have been racial problems before) might simply have thought they would be afraid of any young black man too. They didn't convict because they thought they would have felt fearful of the boy's skin color too.

It is a sad day in this country when an admitted killer is able to walk on a clearly made-up story.

I hope he never has another good day in his life, but the fact is, he'll be making the rounds of the right wing talk shows very soon and be treated like a celebrity by a certain segment of society.

He's their hero: the guy who made murder legal.

Many of them came here only to taunt and antagonize anyone who wanted to see Zimmerman found guilty.

I'm can't express how disgusted I am right now. I want to scream, to cry, to rail against the mindset in our country tang begets an injustice like this murder. I hope Zimmerman spends the rest of his life looking over his shoulder and living in the kind of fear Travon faced.

I think the message is that people of color need to arm themselves so they can equalize against individuals who want to invade the privacy of others. Different name- same slavery

The court has ruled not guilty... but I cannot rule Mr. Zimmerman to be innocent. The jury was given specific and narrow instructions to follow. So for now, Mr. Zimmerman still has this cloud over him, and this is not the end of this case.

What sickens me the most about this verdict was having now seen the same crime scene photo which the jury also saw. I won't post it directly, but for anyone who has not already seen it and wishes to feed their outrage, here is the link:

http://gawker.com/this-courtesy-of-msnbc-is-trayvon-martins-dead-body-753370712

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE!

This is the "menacing thug" whom George Zimmerman had no recourse but to defend his life from. This is the "punk" (or whatever more likely epithet he really used) who invoked such fear and threat that a John Wayne-abee self-appointed "neighborhood watch captain" was impelled to react with deadly force. This skinny, preppy-dressed kid was the face of terror in George's precious gated community.

Seriously, no offense to Murphy and Grayson supporters, but Florida needs to break off and sink into the Caribbean already. There's no good reason why it's the only state that warrants it's own category on Fark. Aside from that, among the many unfortunate lessons we should take away from this case, it's that the money which corrupts our political system will never go away so long as the same moneyed forces also rig our legal system.

Personally, I have to wonder what kind of outcome we would have seen had Mark O'Mara been walking through a neighborhood he "didn't belong in" and was gunned down by someone who felt threatened by his ethnicity.

every one of those white mothers on the jury said to themselves, "I'd be afraid of a black kid in a hoodie after dark -- Zimmerman must be right."

The problem from the beginning in this case was the quality of the jury pool. In the first place, so much pre-trial publicity contaminated the pool. There was no way an impartial jury was to be found in that town. The prosecution should have moved for a change of venue. Secondly is the inherent racism that exists in the south. And the prosecution in their post-verdit statement was quite wrong; this was always about race. Thirdly, the prosecution didn't do a very good job of objecting to testimony that was improper. Non-trained individuals testifying about psychological matters, for example. Conversely, they failed to follow up and expand inculpatory testimony.

All together, it resulted in ineffective prosecution and a biased jury, both of which operated in Zim's favor.

The whole thing disgusts me.

I was hoping upon hope the jury would make the right call. Nope. Open season on black males, at least in Florida. So disgusting. I'm ashamed to be white.

After my brother and sister-in-law's untimely deaths, I raised my nephew, who is mixed-race. It is hard to explain to anyone who is not the parent of a minority child how soul-scarring it is to have to teach your child to always do exactly what a police officer tells you to do, even if it's wrong or illegal, to always keep your hands visible, to never use body language that could be misconstrued as 'threatening' or 'hostile' by anyone they encounter, etc., etc., etc., just to keep them from being gunned down.

I am in pain, and physically ill about last night's verdict.

I could not sleep last night, thinking about this.

I watched some of the post verdict interview with the prosecution team. I noticed that the lead FL State Attorney, Angela Corey (who was not part of the prosecutorial team), seemed to be enjoying her time at the microphone - big smile on her face, flashily dressed with a huge, triple strand, costume jewelry type necklace, and a deep cut ruffled neck top. No somber facial expression, no subdued voice.

There was commentary afterward that did address her jovial demeanor, and pointed out that she was the prosecutor was on the case of a black woman who fired a warning shot at her abusive husband, INTO THE CEILING, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. I just found this link at a site called Twitchy - no knowledge about this site:

http://twitchy.com/2013/07/13/viewers-wonder-why-is-florida-state-attorney-angela-corey-smiling-so-big/

I also thought it very odd that the prosecution would agree to impanel a jury with NO black members.

I could not bear to watch interviews with the defense team.

Back in the sixties I traveled there by bus from Chicago to visit with my mom and new stepfather. When I got to the station in Sanford I spoke with a black man and called him "Mister". By the time I arrived home by taxi the word had traveled to my mom and stepdad that I had committed some kind of crime by using the word "Mister" to address a black man. I was verbally chastised by them. I have to say I never completely knew how incredibly prejudiced my mom was until then. It broke my heart. I was so sickened by the experience that it tore me to shreds inside my soul. I have to say that I've never forgiven them for this. Her new husband was a high priest in the Mormon church. At the time... and maybe forever at this point, Mormons were very prejudiced against the darker races.
