M&M Mars to stop making King Size Snickers bars

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20120217/GPG0101/120217104/Say-goodbye-king-sized-Snickers-bars?odyssey=mod|defcon|text|FRONTPAGE

NEW YORK — Snickers bars may soon satisfy you a bit less.

Mars Inc., the makers of popular candy brands including M&M’s and Twix, will stop making chocolate products that exceed 250 calories by the end of next year.

That means king-sized versions of the company’s chocolate bars will disappear from candy aisles. The privately-held company also makes Milky Way, 3Musketeers, Bounty and Kudos bars.

Mars may not have to make radical changes to reach its goal, however; a standard Snickers bar currently has 280 calories. A package of Twix and a bag of peanut M&M’s each clock in at 250 calories.

I love how these companies are (ab)using "health concerns" to justify reducing the quantity of product in their packaging.

Its a candy bar, not a health food.

Whatever the calorie content, it's hard to feel "guilt-free" when you know you're consuming the likely products of exploitation and child slavery.

reducing the weight of products whilst charging the same price.

Toilet roll makers use a different tack - they make them narrower.

Then they offer "Large" rolls which are the same size that "Regular" rolls used to be.
A few months later, they reduce the size of "Large", but offer "Jumbo".
Then "Jumbo" becomes "Mega".
Now "Mega" is the same size as "Regular" used to be.
And "Regular" amounts to a single square.

"Sorry, I haven't got a square to spare!"

Now some people will be able to burn off extra calories by having to open several smaller candy wrappers instead of just one large one.

Since the old smaller size has 30 calories too many (280 rather than 250), the new smaller size will have to be smaller still to meet their stated goal.
