She was an English teacher at our Jr. High school. My brother and I were both taught by her. She made learning enjoyable.
She was a remarkable person who will surely be missed.

Mary Elizabeth Pierce
Pierce, Mary Elizabeth Passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 4, 1922, she was the daughter of Henry Harris and Eva Irene (Hanes) Pierce. Along with her family, Mary moved to Richton Park in 1928 when the Illinois Central was electrified and her father was responsible for maintaining the switches. She attended a one room schoolhouse on Sauk Trail just east of the IC tracks, Matteson High School for three years, and graduated from Thornton High School. Mary attended Chicago Teachers College and once certified in education, started teaching in 1944 in a one room schoolhouse in Green Garden Township west of Monee. Three years later, in 1947, she taught in the Peotone elementary school. In 1951, Mary was employed by Steger Central Junior High where she taught for 28 years. She retired in 1979 due to cancer. For the next 26 years, she worked as the public relations coordinator for Steger Central. Mary was an active member of the Beta Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational service sorority, and a lifelong member of the Illinois Education Association and the National Educational Association. Mary E. Pierce has been the Village Clerk of Richton Park since 1991. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Library and co-chair of Richton Park's Bicentennial committee. Mary co-authored The History of the Village of Richton Park, Illinois, 75th Anniversary, 1926-2001 and was considered the historian for Richton Park who gladly gave presentations on the development of her community. She served on numerous other village committees and was an ardent promoter of her hometown. Mary E. Pierce also was an avid Chicago White Sox fan. snip

(992 posts)Thanks for sharing. I have some fond memories of teachers and having gone to both catholic elementary and high schools some horror stories about others. Staying in a good frame of mind "Thanks Mrs. Green, where ever you are!".
